-- Visor Delue: Worth it? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=1511)
The extra $100 seems to be a lot for the extra 6 MB of ram and also the colors.
I love the colors, but I don't really want to pay $100 extra for it.
Does anyone else think that the RAM is really that vital? Has anyone had any experiences where they were extremly glad that they had purchased the Deluxe in their situation?
thanks
I bought the 8meg version. Colors weren't important. Just the capacity. I load a lot of support documents and did not want to run out of memory. Answer to your question is how are you going to use the Visor? If only to hold address, some memos and todos; then the 2meg will suit you fine. If however, you foresee downloading alot of EBooks or large databases, then opt for the 8meg version. Other Visor users will most likely post to your question. Read their advice and make your decision a long the lines of what you want the Visor to do for you.
Forgot to mention that the main reason I bought the Visor was the springboard socket and the Backup module. Plus the Palm platform is still the best for a PDA. The Pocket PC was a consideration except for the price and the fact that a subset of the Windows operating system doesn't make it yet on a PDA platform.

A couple of my friends bought 2 meg visors. Man, it was pitiful, they couldnt handle any of my larger programs, just not enough memory. I had my 8 meg visor deluxe with avantgo (which takes up 1.5 meg) and Mapopolis (with the full houston map, another 1.5 meg) and if you want noah dictionary (1.5 meg for the small wordbank) trust me, the extra memory is worth it. Did i mention all those great programs up there were free too?

If you want to carry advanced programs, like Datebook4, you'll want 8 meg.
If you get an eyemodule Springboard and want to take a whole lot of color pictures (187K each), you'll want 8 meg.
If you want to surf the net and add on lots of hacks and other programs, you'll probably want 8 meg.
If you want to stick with a basic Visor and not do too much with it, you'll be happy with 2 meg. For a few months.
Wow, that really helped out a lot.
I always wondered how much memory other programs took up.
I looked all over for the information that you ghave me- thanks a lot!
b1lanceman: Advantgo takes 1.5 megs- but do the 'channels' you subscribe to suck memory?
That is amazing the mapopolis software is free! I wonder how they gain funding. Maybe from all the participating businesses?
BudPritchard: How easy to use is the backup module? What springboard modules do you use?
Morris: Thanks for the info. I guess 1 MB can be eaten away pretty fast. My Program Files folder on my PC is about 1.5 Gigs. So, i guess the Visor will get larger..
Thanks everyone again.
You plug in the Backup module and it immediately runs; giving options for backup or restore. Shows last time backup was used. Press backup and it starts. Takes maybe a minute or two. Don't have any other springboard modules. Do not have a need yet.
about whether my avantgo pages suck memory i have about 17 channels on avantgo
Great. Thanks for the info.
Just another word about space...I have a deluxe and carry the 8 meg board all the time. I don't use everything everyday, but out of the 16 mgs I only have 4 meg available! I've come to see that if someone is only using the PDA as an organizer they'll do OK with 2 meg, but if you want to utilize the potential of the machine, 8+ is a must.
Glad to be of assistance. Here are a couple other considerations, provided after I reviewed the file sizes on my VDx:
1. AvantGo currently takes up 536K
2. DateBook 4 takes up 407K -- it is a FABULOUS program and is worth every byte (and dollar - $25 in total)
3. My eyemodule is taking 1,215K with pictures -- many of which can be dumped onto my hard drive and deleted from the Visor. Still, you need to have available space to take the pictures...
4. Viewer III - a graphics viewer program (.gifs, .jpgs, etc.) takes up 292K
All told, I have 4858K of 7936K available right now. And I am anything but a power user.
Also, I just recalled a conversation with my brother who has a 2MB Palm. He doesn't have the eyemodule to worry about, but he has relayed that he is running short on memory and is considering switching units to an 8MB.
Guess you can tell my bias by now...
Hmm.
You guys all definatly sold me on the 8mb version. heh.
I was checking out the eyemodule last night and was blown away that it costs $200!!
Amazing! That is almost the cost of a Visor.
Morris, do you really think that the eyemodule is worth it? I guess it would be neat not have to carry a dig. cam all around- but I am pretty sure it only takes good pics in direct sunligh like other cams, etc..
actually, I started a new 'eyemodule: whaddya think" topic, so if you would post there..
thanks again everyone!
<< now i just hope someday that I will be able to use the visor I will buy as a drawing tablet for my screen!
My wife and I just purchased the basic version with 2 meg. We were thinking that if we needed more memory we could upgrade with the expansion module.
Now after viewing some of the posts, it looks like the 8 meg expansion memory is not as versatile as that in the palm deluxe?
Can I view avantgo sites and run programs like handyshopper or pocket quicken using the 8 meg expansion? Right now, I have all that loaded and still have 399k free. That's some cushion, but not much.
I still have a week or two on my 30 day trial. I'd like to know if I am really limiting my self by going with the upgrade path. I don't plan on using any modules except for backup. So the springboard slot is not an issue.

My PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION commute...
This is off topic, but, Morris, please change your image. It is totally screwing up the layout of the message board... .
Thanks.
