Exclamation

I just saw a brand new picture posted at www.Palminfocenter.com. It shows the Visor Edge in Red. Apparently, the available colors will be Silver, Blue & Red. It is also rumored that the press conference to introduce the new Visor will be Monday the 12th. Also they mentioned that you will be able to buy the Edge on the Handspring website right after the news conference. However, I was schocked to learn that the price tag is $450-$500!! If that is true has Handspring lost their minds! The picture clearly shows a gray scale screen, no color . I can see paying $450-$500 for color but not for gray scale. Here is part of the article.

"An anonymous source has come through with full details on the Visor Edge, including pictures of the front and back. These are not the same photos that were posted on PDABuzz.
It has the fastest Palm OS processor currently available, the 33Mhz Motorola VZ and 8MB of memory. The screen is a monochrome LCD with 4-bit grayscale (16 shades of gray). The Edge has a rechargeable lithium ion battery.

As had been previously reported, it has three color options: Metallic Silver, Red and Blue and will be announced at a press event next Monday, March 12. It will be available on the Handspring website on the same day.

It will sell for about $475, though that price is very approximate. It could be $450 or $500. The source was very unsure about this.

Its size will be 4.7 inches x 3.1inches x .43 inches."

Is this way to expensive or just me?

I've been spoiled by Prism's color. I have things color-coded in DateBk4, and I prefer reading with black text on a white background, so it would be hard for me to go back to monochrome.

Arrow Doubtful

I doubt that the Edge will be $450 (same price as the Prism). I think it will be sub $400...between the Platinum and the Prism.

Well, that seems to be just a tad wider than my VDX, same height, and just over half as thick. Looks like the springboard sled does not fit within it, so with the sled it's probably going to be about as thick as my Vdx, maybe a bit thicker.

And yes, that's too expensive.

Now, is it lighter?

Totally agree with that! No way in the world I would pay more than $400 for that. Didn't Sony teach HS a lesson by charging an exhorbitant amount for a B&W model, only to find that they got creamed by everybody else in sales.

Also, if you keep a SB module in all the time (like I do!), there's really no benefit to the Edge, since you have to keep that cradle on.

I'll keep my Prism, and think about it, when the color version comes out. That thing is simply a thinner Platinum...

I guess my decision may depend on how spectacular PalmOS 4.0 is.

Hey! That Stylus looks kinda cool... maybe it's a combo thing?

HS ya let me down. You guys must have caught the Sony bug.

It's so...ugly. It has less style than their current models, which, I would argue, were never THAT well designed from an Industrial Design standpoint to bein with.

And what is with the chrome buttons? Yuck.

Maybe with color...but not before. This is obviously meant to compete with the Vx, but its arrival seems rather anti-climatic IMHO. So they've proven they can build it smaller...now how long do we have to wait for color?

And another thing...what does the connector that the sled attaches to look like when the sled's not connected? Monday should be an interesting day.

Kind of a difficult time...Prism not perfect, Edge not color...What to do what to do what to do?

The red unit is pretty ugly.. Hope it looks better in person.

I wonder how much the Springboard slot itself costs? I mean, you figure that the Visor Edge costs around $400 (the price of a Vx), and add about $50 or so for the detachable Springboard (springboard slot, plus connecting electronics and whatnot).

I wouldn't pay it, but I'm sure there are people out there that will. I mean, the Vx sold rather well, didn't it? $400+ for a monochrome device is just out of my personal budget. Now if someone else were paying for it . . .

I STILL haven't gotten my Prism yet (a few more weeks, I swear!), and I do want color, so the Edge isn't even a blip on my 'maybe purchase' radar. However, it's still interesting to see new products come out, even if I do not plan to purchse one yet.

I hope they at least include the SB add on. They probably will, it wouldn't look very good if they didn't.

I would be very surprise if they don't include the springboard connector.

I have made up my mind to sell my Prism and get an Edge. it was an agonizing decision because I lvoe the color. There is no point having color if you hardly use it because the device is always in your bag instead of your pocket.

Posted by Gameboy70 on 03-09-2001 05:52 AM:

I don't know about the $450-499 price range PIC's claiming. I could've sworn that someone posted an online vendor's inventory listing (Staples perhaps), for the three Edge variations -- each with an MSRP of $370, plus change.

Pricing the Edge in the Prism range could be viable. After all, Palm went from charging more for the IIIc than the Vx to charging less for it than the Vx. But the wild card is the m505. Unless Handspring has a firm idea of where Palm's going to put it, placing the Edge in the $500 is pretty risky. To me, $370-400 sounds closer to the mark: essentially the price of the Vx (when it's presumably lowered after the m505's release), plus the Springboard adapter.

The Edge will probably be $399-$400. I got my Prism for $475...and I'm addicted to color...I couldn't go back. DateBk4 in Color is the shiznit.

I guess I'm the odd one out. I'd go back to monochrome without much of a backward glance, and that red one is everything I wanted in a pda: small, attractive (to me at any rate), red, metal, and Handspring.

Arrow Dang

All this talk about Datebk4 and how cool it is in color is really bumming me out, with my "old" (~1.5 years) VDX. I am really hoping they are keeping it a good secret that the Edge also is available in color. Please!

Posted by Vertigo on 03-09-2001 03:12 PM:

I don't know how you guys and gals can consider going back to monochrome! After a couple weeks of using my Visor Prism, I turned on my Visor Deluxe (mostly for ****s & giggles ) and I was shocked at the differnce. I might consider it if the screen was backlit like the Prism's with grayscale. That green backlight was horrible now that I look back on it.

The `ge'ek-us-cave-i'cu`s species doesn't go out in the sun much, so the screen really isn't a problem outdoors

Posted by dick-richardson on 03-09-2001 03:35 PM:

Going back to monochrome is pretty easy when you spend quite a bit of time outside (and know you are going to spend even more time outside come summer). I might hold off until the color version comes out to see if they go side-lit (I don't know why they wouldn't), but I'd very easily be able to justify going monochrome.

Let me know if you want to trade your Prism for my VDX...or if you just want to sell me your Prism for a great price!!
