Module suggestions
I have Platinum with NO modules, this is my 3rd Palm OS unit. I just recieved a $300 Amazon gift certificate and wish to get some modules to make my Plat more fun. I miss the Flash memory of the Palm III and would love to play with GPS for geocaching and stuff. I would love to have back up & flash accessible storage.
What modules would you suggest I buy with this $300?
Many people like the Magellan GPS companion as a GPS. As far as back-up and storage if you're looking for a springboard only solution I suggest the Hagiwara Backup & 8MB Flash Module as it does both back-up with the touch of a button and has 8MB to store stuff. If you want seperate solutions get the handspring back-up module and either a mem-plug like product, or a flash module.

I would get the Memplug. It gives you as much space as you need (up to the CF or SM card size)and provides a backup, all in one unit. WithPiDirect and PiVFS, you can run apps off the card.

Mem Plug is a good choice for back-up and other storage options. Innopocket's Flash Plus is another. With either, be sure to get a good memory card as big as you can afford.
Cheap cards (Mr. Flash brand) can be purchased at www.newegg.com, but the cheap cards are less reliable and suck battery power down faster than name brand cards do.
GPS- check the postings. I have a HandyGPS that I am pretty happy with, but there are people who really love and hate both devices and their manufacturers. Personally, I find the whole thing rather awkward (big module, awkward interface, slow maps, etc.)
The modules I use the most are FlashPlus (almost hourly), eyemodule (several times a week), SoundsGood (sporadically), HandyGPS (when travelling, mostly for fun), and the Thinmodem (which I have not actually used yet, but am still looking for a good ISP for.)
By the way- modules are usually good investments to purchase used- as long as the original owner includes all manuals, codes, etc. I have a few used modules and they work just as well as new ones would- but usually cost about 1/2 of a new one!
Well, up until this point, ive never run out of memory on my visor. after irc/icq/aim/net/ftp/mmail/various hacks/phone numbers/40 memos/3 games i still have 3 megs left.
depending on your situation, i would get a stowaway, then a thinmodem, then the backup module. One of the mp3 players for the visor (innopak i think) dropped the price to $89 (without the mem card). So that might be a nifty idea.
I hear that the Innopocket FlashPlus module is pretty good - but then since I'm president of the company that makes the software for it, I'm required to say that
Seriously though, being able to get your Visor on the net is also a really great thing. It's allowed me to travel without a laptop and I can't even begin to put a value on that! Needless to say, you may want to consider a modem module. Even though I have connectivity through my mobile phone, I still carry a modem module to use whenever there's a land line available.
I would also consider a Handspring Backup Module. Although I also use my CompactFlash adapter for daily backups, I still backup weekly to a good 'ol backup module. You can't have too many backups, and as good as the memory card backup solutions are, they still can't touch the simplicity and reliability of a Backup Module.

Man...how long has the FlashPlus been available? And I have to wait for mine from PalmGear (no Amazon for this item yet.) Supply & Demand weighting in on my wait I suppose?!?

I ordered mine from Innopocket back when they came out and had it in a week and a half.
