Fatal Exception Hell

I am now an official member of the Edge's "Fatal Exception" club. Gosh, I feel so honored. I took my Edge out of my purse to add something to my calendar, and my membership certificate was displayed proudly on the screen.

I am not pissed at Handspring - I am pissed at myself for keeping my Edge. I knew that this was going to happen; it was just a matter of time.

I did a soft reset and got the palm start screen and it just sat there. I couldn't turn my Edge off and it wouldn't soft reset anymore. It just sat there with the palm screen displayed. What's strange, though, is that I pressed the power button appx. 10 times really fast and everything came back and it is working fine (for the time being).

So... should I expect this to keep happening? (sigh)

Nah! If it's working fine now, keep using it. Then, when the Cie t615 comes out, buy that and transfer all your data from your Edge. Then ebay it.

Fatal Exception

Are you sure this is just an edge problem? Every website I have looked at has this kind of complaint for all kinds of handhelds, not just the edge. Sometimes some little software app just goes kaboom, and the thing just goes into an infinite loop of fatal resets. My prism has done it several times, but I can always trace it down to some new program I added, or to something i just tried to move to my memplug.

The cure is to reset your visor using the reset pin while holding down the power button. Release the power button and you will see a popup menu assking if you want to delete your data. Choose "UP" for yes, and then Hotsync your visor to re-sync all of your data and programs.

I think that the edge is unfairly beat up in this discussion group. 1/2 dozen people have had "lemons', and they complain so much it makes it sound like the whole world is falling apart. Electronics always fail, no matter what they are or what brand. Some individual units may just fail sooner.

I don't own an Edge, but I have sold several. I have never seen a quality or reliability problem.

Have fun explaining the 6+ units I recieved that all were bunk. Fact is, I work with technology all the time and fully realize that it fails. I have also had quite a few pda's, starting with a PalmPilot pro. None of them had worse quality than the edge (with the possible exception of Palm's IIIe), but worse than that, none of them had the crap support from their respective corporation that the edge does.

IOW, to spell it out for the lay members of the crowd, a significant percentage of edge's are lack-luster. This wouldn't necessarily make it a bad purchase were there some sort of guarantee that the company would correct any problems.

If you are still under warranty, you should get it replaced. I think that is the only solution. I had the problem whenever I would use a Springboard Module.

Well, I am now up to four fatal exception errors. The last two both happened in the morning after my Edge sat unused all night. I called Handspring's technical support and they jerked me around (big surprise). They tried to convince me that the fatal exceptions are being caused by third-party software applications. Whatever. Doesn't sound like there is going to be another replacement in my future.

My mind is made up: I am going to sell my Edge, as well as all of my accessories (backup module, 8mb flash module, case, extra styli, etc.) and buy an M500.

You should also consider taking a look at the CLIE T415. I got to play around with one today at BestBuy and really liked it.

There might be something to this whole "FormFactor" thing after all!

If I were going for a mono device again, I'd seriously consider the t415. I thought the screen was great, I think it's smaller than the M500 yet it still felt substantial in my hand, and it does come with some cool programs (the A/V remote is the first thing that comes to mind, but there were others). The only things I didn't like were the supplied cover and the lack of anything more than the standard datebook (yeha I know, it's fixable for more $$$. I've just gotten spoiled by having Datebook+ built in). I also read somewhere about the t415 screen flickering.

I suggest going somewhere that has both the M500 and the t415, play with them for a while, and see which one you like.

Wait for the t600 clie...its color and its the size of the clie.

As for me I am waiting until after X-mas to see if the price of the M505 or the Clie n610 comes down, or if the t600 comes out at a good price like $399. but if none of that happens buy Jan 2 2002 i an going to get the 16mb upgrade on my edge.

Butt if your going to get a new pda go for color...i know the battery life sucks butt hey.

DateBook+ was the app I missed the most when I gave up my Prism. I kept debating on buying DB4 and I would put it off and put it off. Finally, I just did it. Believe me, you can have DB+. DateBook4 is incredible. There are so many cool features.

One of the nicest is the ability to schedule events in different timezones not to mention icons. I have not even begun to tap into all the features.

The most relied on apps are my datebook+ and the advance calculator. And when i move away from Handspring i will have to pay A minimum of $50 to buy apps to take up my ram. (whats dbk4 like 340k and a new calculator 288k?).
Thats one of the biggest and most anoying things that i am struggling with. Is that in the long run it will cost me more to switch name brands. Unless i use krackz or napster some apps, untill i get the money to buy them.

All this hassle...why cant HS make an 16mb color edge?

Actually, DB4 is 482K, as it currently exists on my CLIE. It really is worth it to me, though. I used the internal DateBook for a while, without to much difficulty, but DB4 is definately worth it.

I also missed the Advanced Calculator. Not really because I needed it, but because it can be extremely useful at times. Particularly when trying to do conversions. So, I got Parens, the folks who make the Advanced Calculator on Visor's. It takes up 84K. It can be found here: Parens It is not to large and only $10.00 through PayPal.

As for using illegal software, you should probably read this Thread.

Yeah i know, I read that thread. I didnt chime in on it cause its like the abortion debate. Too many good points on both sides and nothing is accomplished.
As for me i only use the Stolen (cracked) software Until i obtain the money to buy it. which is sometimes two months, when some software only gives you 15 days to try or gives you only a sample. I just cant tell if it is worth it to shell out cash with just a sample.

I do think DBK4 and action names are awesome...butt i cant use up 487k of my ram. I am already pushing it with vital stuff. I only have one game on my Edge, and it takes only 184k. (i do have more on my 8mb flash butt i dont use the damn springboard sled too much).

now back to the original topic.
Dont get them T415 onless you try it, its not for everyone. For me the screen is alot smaller (i think smaller tham the M100) and the text is odd . Plus i spent 30min. trying to figure out why it seemeed slower than most new Pda's.

I still say go for the color. Butt if you want to stay with mono, go for the greatest butt ugliest pda ever made....the Handera 330.
Now if you want to stay with size i guess go with the M500, which i think is not worth the bigger price than the edge. Plus the edge is better.

I do wish you good luck on what ever you do and remember that nomatter which pda you choose you will gan something butt give something else up. thats why there is no perfect pda, and a whole bunch to chose from.

To get (basically) the same functionality as datebook+, I use a free program that came with my m500 called whatzup that puts todo's and appointments on the same screen. Nice thing is that it shows me appts/todos for a specified amount of time in advance. I lost floating events, but that wasn't a big deal as they weren't recognized on the desktop anyway. For the calculator, I use EasyCalc - which is free, takes up 172K, and does everything advanced calc did, (except conversions - I have the info saved in memopad) and graphs as well.

I don't have CityTime, but it's a pointless program with OS4's ability to recognize time zones, daylight savings time, etc.

IOW, the m500 is better than the edge in almost every respect.

I've owned a Handspring since their introduction. In that time I've had five due to my dropping them and cracking the screen or the last, a weird screen problem. I only had to pay $25 for "advanced replacement" on the last. I called in the afternoon and got my new one the NEXT MORNING. That is increadible service to me.

Well, I got my edge a little over 8 months now. It never did have all the problems that were talked about except for the buttons...

indeed, as long as everyone is satisfied with what they have then it's all good
