-- EB Slipper vs. Rhodiana (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12083)
Hi everyone,
I just bought a Visor Platinum and I an trying to choose a case. I have narrowed it down to the EB Slipper case and the Rhodiana case.
Does anyone have a preference between the two? Any problems with either case I should be aware of?
Thanks very much
- Jim
I used to have a Rhodiana (2 actually... my wife had one too). Overall it is a good case. It is a little thicker than I would like, but this also equates to more protection... protection that was very handy when the belt clip broke and it fell from my hip to the ground. I understand this has been fixed.
The case is easy to use and looks fairly nice. I don't know if it compares to leather, but it looks nice. The belt clip is quite functional, and I liked it. That said, I just (about a month ago) ordered an E&B Slipper Prism (I sold my Rhodiana with my Vdx). I really need another belt clip case and the E&B seemed to be the most reasonably priced of the leather belt clip cases out there. I'm pretty irritated with the amount of time it is taking to get it, though. I ordered near the end of January... it has been almost a month. E&B doesn't have them, directcase.com doesn't have them, etc. It would have been cheaper to kill a cow and sew it myself ;-).
I still have thoughts about the Vaja... just don't know. If I was certain that it would sync, I'd probably spring for the model 834... however, $84 is too much for a non-sync case.
I have both but use the Rhodiana almost all the time. I like the padding on the Rhodiana and the straps on the back (I only stick one finger through for a little more security). I think that the belt clip is easier to use because it's larger, although the height of the button on the case is about the same. I have a little trouble detaching the E&B from the clip because I tend to pull up on the Visor while I'm pressing the clip release, so the metal catch seems to get caught on the button/post as I try to draw my visor.
I use the E&B for more formal wear when I think that the leather case is more appropriate (I get to wear jeans at work, so the nylon Rhodiana is fine there). I've only been able to get the Visor to sync once while in the E&B case, but that doesn't really bother me. Some people have problems with the clip strap on the Rhodiana, but I have small hands, so I get by. One thing that I can do with the E&B is open the case and navigate with one hand using my fingernail (on a screen protector). I can't hold the Rhodiana and open it with the same hand. I don't have a problem with withdrawing the stylus on either case because I use the PDA Panache Custon stylus.
Overall, I prefer the Rhodiana. Check out the reviews and the archives. Neither is that expensive (compared to the Vaja), so you could try both.
I had the Slipper for my visor deluxe and now use the Rhodiana with the Prism. I actually ordered the Slipper for the Prism but gave up waiting for it. I liked the Slipper a lot and it works well in a suit coat inner pocket for business. However, I could never get it to hotsynch with the case on and its a pain to pull it off. I received the Rhodiana last Friday and was initially disappointed with its look and bulk. I brought it home and my wife (to my surprise) liked it a lot. After using it for a few days, I like it a lot and am happy I stayed with it. Its well padded and if you pull the prism out from the bottom, its a lot easier than undoing the snaps. I still have the prism's slip case to use when the Rhodiana is not appropriate. Neither case had belt clips or other attachments since I carry the prism in a pocket or brief case, so I can't talk to the merits of one belt system vs. another. In all, you can't go wrong either way. They're very different cases but both are well made and fun to use.
Does anyone have some fresh input on the Rhodiana vs. EB slipper/slipper zipit? I'm very seriously considering getting the Stowaway, and need to get a case as well. If I have to remove my Visor from it's case to use the keyboard, it seems like that will defeat the purpose. I can just see myself removing the Visor from its case for "just a sec" to type up a report and the Visor doing a graceful arch from my hand to the tile floor at work. But at the same time, I know I that I must have something to protect my poor vulnerable Visor from this tough world we live in. I can't find a compromise.....Does anyone else have any ideas?
I can add a bit to this. I used to have a Rhodiana for by Vdx and now have a E&B Slipper for my Prism. I really like the Slipper and think that overall it better suits my needs. The Rhodiana is a little bit of a pain - removing the visor usually hangs up on the plastic. It works find, but I'm picky. The E&B is really great, and I do just slip it out to type up a report. I was really concerned about the zipper base, but only because the Rhodiana had me concerned about the difficulty removing the visor.
I would go E&B... it is great. I really like it, and would highly recommend the belt clip.
I also favor the slipper, I can sync in the case (it gets easier with age....) and use the stowaway, I made a small hole in the back so I can even recharge the full charge battery without removing it from the case. My basic theory is this: the more you have to take the visor out of the case, the more likely you are to drop it, I can leave my visor in its case practically all the time. Using the belt clip, it is safe when I move around. Sure the eb slipper case is not as padded as many other cases, but you have to take the visor out so often for basic things (syncing, using the stowaway, reseting) that your expensive device is unprotected alot. Just my 2 cents......
oh I almost forgot, absolutely key to syncing with the e & b slipper case is taping a penny right above the little plastic hook thingy on the sync base...this idea was put forward by someone else on this forum somewhere, it really works, that man (or women) should receive some kind of visorcentral genius award......
Must the VDx be removed from the case for Rhodiana?
I prefer the design of the Rhodiana and don't mind taking it out to hot sync (carpeted floor) but would definitely prefer to use it in the case with the Stowaway? Anyone know?
Prism in old deluxe slipper case
I thought some of you may like to know that you can actually fit the prism into the EB deluxe slipper case. It needs some force the first time. But after the leather stretched, it will fit in very nicely. some short comings include the LED and the on/off swich are covered. I use the lauch'em 3 beta to show that the battery is charging when inserting the prism to the cradle. As for the on/off switch, it can be activated by pressing on the leather above the switch. The Advantage of using it is that you do not need to unzip and pull the leather back in order the hotsyn or charge the prism. you just insert it in and activate the hotsyn button. that's it. And the Stowaway keyboard can be used with min. effort. I believe it will be quite troublesome to perform the unzip/pull leather step before & after using the keyboard, if you just need to type a short memo.
My biggest complaint about these two cases is that they don't have alot of give and take room for different modules, something that is an issue for handspring users.
