Startec and wireless web connection kit

I want to use my startac with my laptop like i do my visor.
i see cables for sale and i know sprint has the dialer 3.0 software for free. but my question is the kit is sold with a null modem.
Do i need one? should i buy the kit for the 40$ or can i buy the cable for 15 and download the freesoftware??

I've never needed the null modem adapter connecting to my laptop or desktop. As for that $15.00 cable, are you sure it's a standard serial-to-StarTAC cable? The phone requires a cable with a built-in interface to convert RS232 to its TTL signals. I've not seen any priced that low before.

the cable is Here on ebay. does it look like this will work. i am hesitant to buy it cause i have never seen a kit or cable for less than 40$....
