One additional observation on the case in the photo...

It looks like the application buttons on each side are set in a sunken area, whereas (at least on my IVD from 12/99) the current Visor's app buttons are flush with the face of the case. Perhaps this lends more credibility to the argument that at least the case is not a phoney?

And we thank you for that, regardless of whether the photo is authentic or not, it would be silly to not jump on any scrap of Prism info we can get at this time.

My reply is in regards to the motivation. First off, it really doesn't matter about how reputable a magazine is, many do it just to sell copies. A few months back, many gaming mags ran mock-ups of the Nintendo Dolphin (now GameCube) controllers. They also did this with the Game Boy Advance, and they looked pretty legit (until the real pics were released). I also remember seeing a mock-up of the PS One prior to official photos. All were convincing, and not all were clearly marked as fakes.

I do have a question, though. Does the mag tout that it has a Visor Prism pic anywhere on the cover or within the table of contents? Is it mentioned anywhere other than the caption under the image itself? I ask because if they do headline it, it lends more legitimacy to it. If not, however, then it leans more in the realm of the mock-up.

Regardless, if Handspring does annouce them on Monday, we'll know for sure then. Gee, all this excitment is gettin' me all worked up (VisorPhone's release possibly only a month away, new Visor specs after the weekend, the PS2 coming out in 2 weeks . . .)

You may want to look a little more closely at your Visor. My IVD has the same indentations (purchased early summer 2000), although they aren't visible unless you look at them at an angle.

It appears ONLY in the caption. There is no mention of the Visor Prism anywhere in the article or in the table of contents.

FYI, this is the same photo. They clipped it from my page and did their own thing with it without asking me. All the other sites either linked to my site, or asked me for permission.

Its Real

I think the pciture is real. The Caption clearly states underneath that it is the Handspring Visor Prism. Furthermore, Yahoo Internet Life is a credible magazine and would not use a mockup in that way.

Still, I am not impressed by what I see. The Visor Prism looks way too big when compared to the Deluxe. Handspring should be looking at making smaller devices not bigger ones...

And these smaller color devices should cost how much and take how long to develop? Many people are already complaining about the Prism's $450 price... The cost of a color device with the form factor of, say, a Palm V would probably be considerably more, and since nobody else is currently making one it would require some good R & D- which translates to a longer wait for the product... something which people around these parts don't respond to kindly.

I'm going to wait until the full specs and the products are officially released, go down to Staples/Best Buy/CompUSA and hold one in my hand, check out the readability of the color display, etc. before I start bashing the product.

Finally, some common sense! Two months ago, everyone was challenging Handspring to produce a color model on the basis that color was "inevitable," citing color TVs and PCs as precendents. But the other inevitability is the high cost for early adopters. I can still remember my parents paying something like $1300 for a color TV back in the 70s.

It's not like Handspring or some other company can just wave a magic wand and produce a PVx/Sprinboard-enabled/color/internet-connected PDA with a four week battery life for under $300. Sure, color's inevitable, and three years from now color PDAs will cost less than $200. Too bad we can't live in the future. Sometimes life in the real world isn't very Buck Rogers.

Of course, if you can do without the springboard slot, you can wait 8 months for the smaller color PalmV:

Palm CEO Carl Yankowski has said that a new, smaller Palm V will be available sometime next year in both color and monocrome versions. And it will also have a postage stamp size slot to handle incremental type data.

Oh yeah...even better, I remember my father paying $200 for a USED HP-35 calculator in the early 70's. Now you can go to RadioShack (or Kmart, or...) and pick up a calculator for <$10 that does more than that calculator did. Of course, that HP-35 is still working...

Okay...

Unless the Yahoo Mag decided to ruin their credability, the mage is real! I checked out the Yahoo Mag website, and in their links for mag articles fro the November issue, they mentioned Handago and Sim City among other links they had for that article. So unless the image is doctored in the article, after the fact (which I doubt) that's what it looks like.

Personally, I'm a little disapointed how they didnt' change the design really at all. My question though, is will it have the same HotSync connector. It'd stink if people had to go buy a new keyboard if they got a new visor. The same question goes for the platinum.

Thanks for the info. Shopper.com's "Product Info" link shows a thumbnail image of the Prism which is identical to the Yahoo picture. They also have a thumbnail of the Platinum. Same so-so form factor, but that metal case kills! Judging from that one picture, I guarantee you that the Platinum is going to be the number one X-mas item if it hits retail by Thanksgiving.

I wonder why the Prism has the power button on the right side, while the Platinum has the power button on the left.
