-- Warranty question. (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13870)

Will Handspring (or Palm for that matter) honor the warranty on a device if you are not the original owner, but it is still within its warranty.

I ask this because I am thinking about buying an Edge used, but with all the problems reported on VC (and seen by myself at CompUSA) I want to be sure the warranty will be honored.

thanks

The opening line from Handspring's Hardware limited Warranty reads, emphasis is mine:
quote:
Handspring, Inc. (Handspring), warrants to the original end user (Customer) that this product will be free from defects in workmanship and materials, under normal intended use, for one year from the date of original purchase from Handspring.
Palm Computing's reads:
quote:
Palm Computing, Inc. (Palm Computing), warrants to the original end user (Customer) that this product will be free from defects in workmanship and materials, under normal use, for one year from the date of original purchase from Palm Computing or its authorized reseller.
So, technically they do not have to honor the warranty of a used device. However, that does not mean they won't.

Arrow They will honor it

I know for a fact that they will honor the warranty. There is no way for them to know if you were the original owner or not..what if you got it as a gift?

Well, they could go off of whoever registered it on their site first. While I agree that I don't think it would be an issue, they could use that as a basis for who the "original" owner was. Now, if the unit was never registered by the original owner, then this wouldn't be an issue.

On a related topic, has anyone who has registered with Handspring, ever gotten a notice for updates for their product? (ie, have they ever sent you an email letting you know that a new version of the desktop, or a OS patch is out.)

Thanks for the info.

I figured their documentation stated that the warranty only applied to the original owner. I am more interested to know if anyone has personally experienced otherwise. I guess they only ask the serial number when you call in for a warranty issue, and if the unit has never been registered they would'nt know the difference. Has anyone had a real experience with this?

Talking

Yardie's correct. Another scenario similar to a gift would be a bulk purchase of handhelds for more than one user. In addition, registration is optional and does not relate to the warranty.
