-- HELP! Can't get VDX/nokia8290 to web connect (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10247)

Posted by Jscalia on 12-21-2000 03:21 AM:

OK..Trying to connect my VDX with all proper IRlink software and enhancements through my Nokia 8290 with voicestream. I have ATT worldnett as ISP. I've entered 00 phone number and added a script Send ATDT 2880002 Send CR Delay 8 End.
When I try to connect the phone signals a message "check operator services" as my VDX is in the "signing on" screen. Then after a few seconds signals an error:PPP timeout (Ox1231).
Anyone with any suggestions?

Angry

I saw the same thing when I first tried it. You have to
have "DataStream" service enabled on your account.
The funny thing is that, contrary to their own
docs, Datastream is NOT automatically enabled.
So, your solution, at least to this issue, is to contact
VStream tech support and have them turn on DataStream.
You might need to subscribe to InfoStream to get
DataStream, I'm not sure. Good luck though, when dealing with VStream tech support you have to get through several
layers of people who, IMHO have no business being in
"Tech Support"

Good luck!

Jscalia,
Contrary to what rauld said, I didn't need to subscribe to the datastream service. The 8290 IS data enabled and GSM can handle data services. It sounds like you may have a problem with the network settings.

Why are you entering 00 for the phone number? In the network tab of the prefs icon, enter your ISPs number and setup the script like you would at your desktop. The phone needs to know the number of your ISP the same as your home phone does. The difference is that you 8290 and modem are one in the same unlike your home phone which is distinct from your modem/pc.

There are a few threads on the board about this subject. Just search for nokia 8290 and you should have no problem connecting without datastream.

Hope this helps and saves you some $$

No, I think Rauld is correct about the necessity for data service. The IR link error I am getting is a "no data carrier" error. It may be that certain Voicestream GSM markets have data service activated. I am in the NY/NJ metro area. I believe you are in the DC metro area.

Good point. It could be the market. I wouldn't let them charge you any extra, though. Let them know that there are other customers who aren't paying for the extra service.

jscalia --

i'm in the same market as you, and with no extra service, i'm connecting just fine... i have the 600 minutes for $40 plan (with 2000 extra weekend minutes... how will i use them, i wonder? )

matty, VoiceStream now has a 600/3000 minute plan that you can upgrade to at no additional cost. You only have to extend your contract. I'm doing my best to use them up! I just discovered Fidelity has a mobile site where I can check my 401k contributions. Kinda' cool.

Matty help me with this connection

How did you get your Visor to communicate through voicestream. How did you set up your Network preferences, modem etc. I have tried connecting with IR link but always get a "no data service" error. I have the same Voicestream plan as you.

i pretty much followed lmidnight's (and other threads') instructions... plus the irlink pdf manual...

it comes down to this, i think:

in your modem preferences, create a custom setting by changing the speed to 9600 and the string to AT&FV1E0&D2&S0&C1S0=0S7=60S35=7

then, in irlink, check redirect cradle, and the irda 1.0 box.

make sure your phone's ir is activated by pressing menu then 9: it should say ir activated and then bring you back to the main screen where a little icon flashes in the upper right corner... point the devices' ir ports at one another...

then back to the irlink on the visor: use the quickconnect feature to network panel, connect, and you should be golden.

i'm assuming two things:

a) you downloaded the ir updates from palm... if not, you need those too, but not all of them, there're other threads on this board which discuss the good and the bad - i can't remember which they are...

b) you're using a regular dialup isp - mine's earthlink, so in the network panel i just use an earthlink dialup number, with area code.

i hope this helps...

jscalia, i do'nt know if you're up and running yet, but here's something weird:

i had been using it fine before i went on my 2 week vacation to a non-voicestream covered region, so i didn't use it at all...

then when i came back, i tried to use the combo, and had beaming troubles -- the phone was not receiving the signal... a soft reset of the visor cleared that up, but then i tried again, and tho' the ir seemed to work this time, i got a "no data carrier" error on the visor and "terminal connection lost" on the phone...

so, i was in the train station at the time, and had to go before i could troubleshoot.

on the train, i remembered an option in the gsmtools menu that was "terminal"... so i went to that screen, and checked and unchecked the connect box a couple of times, and left it checked.

much later in the day, i tried again (this time on the train back) and... it worked fine!

so: i don't know if it was the gsmtools thing or just being in the train station the first time, but if you're trying in the train station, leave there and try somewhere else, or if you're at home, or the office, or whatever, try the gsmtools terminal option...

hope this helps...

Thanks for that. I dont have gsmtool. The problem now is that my free trial version of IRlink is expired and despite trying to delete the old version and download a new trial version it wont let me run it without registering it. So I'm up the creek on this one. By the way, on your last posting you had indicated the AT string for the network connection....a very long string. I did not have that in my settings, just the default one. Where did you get that initialization string? and why is it different than the default?

Posted by matty on 01-06-2001 12:21 PM:

i got that string from the irlink manual...

i have no idea why it's different... my tech savvy doesn't extend quite that far...
