Visor OS upgrade
Okay, this is all presuming that you have a MemPlug and have freed up a goodly portion of your main RAM...
We are all aware (and should have been when we purchased these units) that the OS ROM is not flash upgradeable. Boo Hoo for us.
However, isn't a more robust upgrade (say to Palm OS 4.x or possibly even 5.0) possible by putting it into the RAM as an update. This is basically what HS has done up to this point with their various updates after introducing a unit.
Has anyone done this?
Thoughts?
Thanks...
Just another crazy idea...
Over and Over
This topic has been pounded to death ad nauseum for three years now, and the answers (from those far more technically adept than I) always range between no and definately not.
The updates Handspring has released are essentially very minor tweaks -- officially santioned "hacks" to correct or compensate for shortcomings of the OS. A major upgrade is a significant overhaul of the OS which affects everything...the way the OS and memory interact.
A parable would be to suggest that a Windows 95 machine could be made to run an application which requires Windows XP with a third-party app running interference between the obsolete OS and the up-to-date application...it is theoretically possible, but an undertaking that would be neither elegant or worth the investment in programming.
Re: Over and Over
quote:AAMOF, a RAM-based update to OS 4.x is possible. OS 5.x is not since the Visors are 68k based and OS 5 is ARM only. That being said, the chances of such a RAM based update are slim and none since Handspring has never produced anything other than bugfix updates for the Visors, and without Handspring making a springboard compatible version of OS 4.x available, it simply won't happen.
