Question

I just ordered my blue VD and I wanted to make sure the stylus that comes with it is allright to use. I read in some of the posts that it scatched the screen or something like that. Maybe I read wrong because this sounds awfully strange. Anyway just wanted to make sure before I start using it when it gets here.

Exclamation

When Visors first came out many people complained that the stock stylus had a rough tip which scratched their screens on the first pass. Mine was fine and I haven't read that much about this problem recently, though it is easy to scratch the screen of any Palm device, so caution is urged.

As for general usability, the stock stylus is crap. It's a thin little plastic stick that almost no one says they're "satisfied" with. The 5-pack deluxe replacements are great and I use mine often. I also have the Pentopia, which is great, but not always handy to carry. You might find an individual replacement from the 5-pack listed for sale on this site or on eBay.

Whatever you do, check out the discussions about screen protection. I've used WriteRights from day one and am quite happy with them. I've had my current one on for about 2 1/2 months and it's only now showing signs of needing to be changed. Other folks are satisfied with less commercial screen-protection options. There have been MANY discussions of this topic on this board.

Enjoy your Visor!

There were a lot of people that got their deliveries in the early months that said that the stock stylus has scratched their screens. I haven't had that problem, but maybe I was lucky. I did purchase a stylus from PDA Panache. Here's the hotlink.
http://www.pdapanache.com

They have had a problem keeping up with demand, but for $15 it is a really nice add-on. Feels nice in the hand, good weight, and they stand behind their products. Otherwise, HS has their 5 pack with has gotten good reviews, and there are other companies, too.

Enjoy your VDX. But you might want to also look into screen protectors. Try this website.

Good information on how to make your own screen protector.

Enjoy.

well, I would say the stock is crap, at least mine was and I ordered around jan 26th. It did scratch the screen and I ended up calling CS and getting a replacement (free of course), so after I got my replacement visor, I use the PDA panache stylus, which I received in about 5 days, so their delivery was fine. But I would say the stock is just something we need to accept, even if it does suck, get a new one. And as a side note, someone said that any palm-device screens have easy-to-scratch screens, I do not agree, my palm IIIe (which I no longer use, sold it to a friend), never got a scratch on it, and this was with heavy use... I woudl say handspring's screens are more easily scratched, just my opinion though.

As a gift, I received a stylus from the 5-pack from Handspring and found it *far* nicer to use than the stock stylus.

I also purchased the Stylus+4-Way and *really* like it too. Mine has the pencil, blue ink, black ink, and the plastic stylus for use on the Visor. Weightening of the thing is excellent. A very nice pencil/pen/stylus, and around US $20 - great deal I think.

No, the stock stylus is junk. Get an aftermarket stylus. It has already scratched my screen. I can't afford to wait for a replacement.

Thanks. I ordered some writerights from outpost.com (only $20 w/ overnight shipping), and a PDA Panache stylus (chrome; just couldn't see sticking the gray one in my BVDX). Now I just have to wait for the Visor to get here!

My original IDX (beginning of March) shipped with a nice metal stylus with Ice tip and end. The unit had a bad screen and replacement IDX was sent with black plastic crap stylus. I dunno what the deal is here. Needless to say, I sent the black plastic crap back with the defective IDX.

PDA Panache stylus is best however.

BTW- received replacement Visor in less than 36 hours although CS told me 10 business days!

Anyway, I've had my visor for two weeks or so. It came with the ice deluxe stylus. I have used it all day and night since, except at the bars, etc. But it did help with a conversation with a med student on spring break. And so far no scratches whatsoever. I was elated to see the deluxe stylus in my visor.

Cool

Here's a perspective -- don't hazard the chance that your stylus scratches the screen. Go to Ebay or some similar site and purchase a single deluxe stylus. I did that, and the promotion I did ($10 free from Paypal.com for signing up) allowed me to essentially get my stylus for free. Worth a look...

Good luck to you.

The stock stylus is pretty wimpy, I've never even used it. I've used a PDA Panache chrome one since the first day. However, I still have gotten some light scratches in the Graffiti area, even with the Visor being in a case and me being anal about stuff getting on the screen. The fact is, any speck of invisible foreign material on the stylus or screen may leave a mark if you write on it. I don't think it affects performance at all.. So if you're really worried about the screen, get a screen protector.

Cool

According to recent posts on news:comp.sys.palmtops.pilot the Deluxe visor is nor coming with the deluxe stylus.

Unhappy

Just reporting, not all VDx's come with the deluxe stylus. My graphite was shipped by Handspring on March 6, standard stylus, although numerous posts by color VDx owners note the deluxe stylus.

I just received a five-pack, purchased from Handspring and received in less than a week, and it is a better stylus.

no, it sucks. i replaced it with the deluxe stylus, and its a lot better

Get a replacement stylus. The main problem I had with the included stylus was that it had too much play in the plastic, which cut down on my accuracy with Graffiti. Without applying extra pressure, a lot of my strokes would register incomplete and be misread as taps. That extra pressure is probably what's scratched so many screens more than anything else.

Cool

So what's the verdict on the upgraded "deluxe" stylus from HS? I've got a chrome stylus from PDA Panache, and a deluxe one from HS. While I feel "safer" with the one from PDA Panache, I like the looks and fit of the deluxe HS one.

Is the deluxe stylus going to scratch my Visor?

Seems to me that everyone thinks the deluxe stylus is ok. If I were you I'd use the PDA Panache one. I mean you did pay $18 for it. Also it has the reset pin on the other end which makes it 10x more usefull than that stupid screw driver in the deluxe. What do people use that for anyway? And again the Panache is a nicer weight.

Cool

lennonhead,

seems to me that there is a "stupid" reset pin in the other (writing) end of the deluxe.

I have a deluxe stylus as well as a Pilot (the pen company) Pentopia stylus. I like the Pentopia becuase it is fat and has the gel grip (it is just a Pilot Dr. Grip with a stylus tip in the end of the plastic tube that would normally hold the ink and pen tip). Also, it only cost me $10 at Best Buy.
