hard reset after battery change

Arrgh. Twice now I've had to go through a hard reset after a battery change. At least this time I backed everything up first, so it wasn't as hard to recover. But last week I saw an interesting app (I forget which one) for which a reviewer said "This app forces a hard reset on battery change". Now I'm wondering if something I already put on it responsible. Is there a list of apps guilty of this somewhere, or do I have to try it out one at a time? I tried googling groups, and didn't see anything that covered it. I already gave up using Nihm batteries, and have used only regular alkalines in my Viso Neo.

One hint that may help if you don't have an app that's causing this: whenever changing batteries, DO NOT press any buttons (doing so may drain the capacitor that supposed to supply power during the change). If you're placing the Visor face down on a desk or table, make sure none of the buttons are getting pressed as you remove or insert the batteries (I use a towel folded up under my VDx).

If this doesn't help, it'll require trial and error to detrmine if a specific app is causing it. Likely candidates might include anything that monitors the battery as well as hacks.

Popfam, thanks for posting your hard-reset problem. I'm having the same problem and I contacted Handspring but received no help. I too have a Neo, I wonder, are you using LauncherIII?

YES, in fact Launcher III was the first thing I suspected, and I will try disabling it before I change the batteries next time. Fortunately, I have a Memplug backup module, so backing up and restoring is only a loss of 20 minutes time, not all my data.

Also, thanks to Mark - I cannot guarantee that I don't accidentally press buttons, so I will be extra aware of that from now on.

Blast from the Past

Kind of late, but there may be a solution for the battery drain problem. The backup capacitor may have failed in a shorted condition. The easiest solution would be to get a new button board, which would have a new capacitor. You can get these at www.GetHighTech.com
