Response from Hagiwara Sys-Com Co., Ltd
Hi all...
In response to my query to Hagiwara Sys about the U.S. availability of the 16mg flash module, I received this message:
"Thank you for contacting us.
Our 16MB Springboard Flash Module will be
available in the States through PalmGear very soon,
maybe within this week.
Please visit following web site.
http://www.palmgear.com
Its price will be around $140."
Yippee!

Today???
According to Palmgear, they should have them on their site today. I sent an email asking when the module would be available for purchase on their website. This is the text:
Any idea when the Hagiwara 16MB Flash Module will be available for order from your website?

how to back up 16 mb flash module ?
When using the 16 mg module can you back up all 24 mg's at one time or do you have to move applications around.
I don't know if when you hot sync it reads all the info or just some of it?
can someone please explain this to me?

backing up the 16mb module
Hi...
My BackUpBuddy configuration manager has a place where I can check off "backup applications and data on expansion cards." Is the 16mb module considered an expansion card?

Just got the 16 module today
So far no major problems with the module. The 16mb module works exactly like the Handspring 8mb module. All of the application and data are running smoothly off the module. This module is just what I needed!!

May not be a good idea to top-off the module
Compacting... ... ... ... ...
While I experienced a similar problem with the 8mb module on a few occasions, I wanted to mention that it may not be wise to try to completely "fill up" the entire 15.8mb on the module. For the second time since I've owned the 16mb Flash Module, I tried to "fill up" the module with a small file (<50k) when I had about 200k left on the module only to have it freeze while "Compacting". This requires a soft reset and corrupts the module forcing a re-format. Thus, you lose everything on the module.
I have had better luck determining how much memory is left on the module and transferring the largest file last. Now I have <48k on the module and I am leaving well enough alone.
It is a time-consuming, battery-intensive and entirely no-fun process to restore files on your module (even with BackupBuddy) since it is a manual process. I am hopeful that the HotSync architecture will change enabling direct writes to the Flash Module via Hot Sync. But for now, beware the Compacting Demon with low memory left.
-Regards

My new 16mb module
I got my new 16mb flash module today and love it. One small app called TopTwelve refuses to work with the module inserted... works just fine if it isn't inserted. When the module is inserted accessing TopTwelve crashes my Prism every time.
I don't understand what you mean, Doc, about having to reload your module everytime you crash. Maybe I don't understand what you mean by a soft reset. Isn't that when you insert the pin in the back of the handheld... or is that merely a reset and a soft reset is something else? I have crashed several times trying to get TopTwelve to work and have not had to reload anything on the module... even though I have had to restart my Prism with the pin.
I would appreciate it if you would clarify this for me.
Thanks,
Jo

compacting mishaps
To answer your question, this little glitch is not exclusive to the 16 mb module, the 8mb module has the same problem. What happen is that when the module approaches full memory capacity, it will initiate a compacting program. The compacting is much like the defrag. program in your desktop computer.
On rare occasions, the glitch results when the module comes close to full capacity <50kb or when you tried to move more kb's into the module than the module has room for. During the process of compactiing, the filemover will give a message saying that the module's memory is corrupted, which will require re-formatting. As a result, ALL the stored memory in the module is lost.
I have only encounter this glitch twice, both times is when I accidentially overloaded the 8 mb module. I have not encountered any problems with my 16 mb module yet. Last night, the module compacted for the first time without any problems.

so far...
LOL.. so far I haven't received any "nice little message stating that my RAM module is corrupted" even though I have had to do several soft resets... must be I haven't brought myself to the attention of the handheld gremlins as yet. Can't wait.

Information -- Details on the difference...
between flash modules and back up modules. I am looking at getting one or the other possibly both. To avoid duplication I need additional information on both types of modules for the Visor. Any assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Is there a way to load a 8 MB or 16 MB board without using Filemover?
I'm planning to upgrade to 16MB. I maintain a backup of my 8 MB board using BackupBuddy so I'd love to insert my new 16 MB board and load it up from my backup.
