OK. So the "loop-dot-dot-8" shortcut to invert the backlighting has been deactivated on the Visor and IIIx. However, on the IIIx, deleting the file "graffiti_shorcuts.prc" in backup directory of Palm Desktop restores it. Anybody know what else is in that file, besides the shortcuts listed in the prefs (which I never use)? I'm tempted to delete it to try the other backlighting, because the standard one sucks.

I am not sure, but the invert backlighting option hasn't really been deactivated, it just doesn't work. Open Shortcuts in Prefs and choose new. Then in ShortCut Text enter in Shortcut.8, you will notice that it now sais [Invert Backlight]. Now hit cancel and create an new shortcut again and to the same thing. It now sais [Regular Backlight]. Interesting, since if it really was deactivated, don't you think they'd completly take the command out, and replace it with something else?

I downloaded InvertHack and it's great because you can load it 3 different ways: 1.)Always reversed, 2.)Reversed as the default, 3.) or Reversed as the option.

A word of warning though, I heard that if you use Option 1 and uninstall it, you are left in the reversed mode and need another hack to get back to the standard backlighting. I chose Option 2.

I must admit, I didn't understand what all the hype about the poor backlighting was, but when I saw it reversed, I definitely could see why so many people prefer it.

InvertHack is freeware and available at www.palmgear.com

There's no such thing as a stupid question.

Turn on your Visor, then press and hold the power button until it comes on. Be sure you're in a dark room so you can see the full effect.

Hey, thanks. That response time was quick. I just never bothered to read the manual. I have also never owned a PDA before. Thanks again.

Okay guys! I have the solution to your problems - the backlight has NOT been deactivated in the Palm IIIx or the Visor. It just misbehaves sometimes.

I know what you all did - you turned on the backlight, and then you did the shortcut loop-dot-8. However, this alone will NOT invert the backlight - I found out through trial and error that if you happen to have the backlight on while doing this, the backlight will not invert immediately - instead, after the shortcut has been activated, TURN OFF the backlight and ON again - your backlight should now be inverted. Sometimes, when you switch apps, the already inverted backlight will revert back to normal, in which case you have to turn off the backlight and turn it on again.

I have tried this with the Palm IIIx and Palm IIIe and it works for sure.

Yeah, I had read about funny things with the IIIx. However, I can't get it to work on my Visor.

I was able to invert on my IIIx, but can't on the Visor. Has anyone managed to do this?

Finally got my hands on a Visor and you guys are right - although the dot-8 shortcut says "Inverting Backlight", the shortcut strangely DOES NOT work, even after I try turning it on and off....very strange. I guess we will just have to installl InvertHack
