-- Can't sign on to ISP using Thinmodem (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10376)
I just got a Thinmodem for Christmas and am excited to start using it...I the modem dials and connects beautifully but, it won't sign on to my ISP's server (Qwest). I'm desparately looking for any ideas getting around the login process to my ISP. I'm hoping that I don't have to switch. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thank you. I get an error message:
Error: timeout
(0x1212)
I have been trying different things such as rechecking my ISP user name and password, verifying that the Network and Modem preferences are set up the way the documentation instructed, and trying different access numbers. I have the IP address set to automatic.

Just guessing, but you probably need to specify an IP address. Are you using this same ISP to connect your desktop machine? If, so, check the Dial-up settings and make the ones on the Visor match.
I had the exact same problem when I received my Thinmodem. I use a local ISP (Xecunet) and I just could not connect. I reset and retried for a couple of hours adding and deleting programs etc.
Finally, suddenly, the darn thing just started working fine. I have reloaded all my programs and it still works fine.
There is some conflict with something, but keep trying...it will probably work...eventually.

Another suggestion is to make sure you have the latest modem software from CardAccess. Version 1.4 is available for download from their support area.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions! I'm glad to hear that it's not just me...That gives me some hope. I do have the latest version of the software loaded (1.41) and have been trying to connect with it. I haven't tried deleting other programs yet.
I did try emailing Card Access's support. They resonded asking the same intial questions MarkEagle asked. I'm hoping to get a response by tomorrow. Card Access support must have a 24 hour email turn around.
I will post any new information that they might have and the result of deleting some programs since this seems to be happening to others as well.
Thanks again!
I JUST GOT MINE TO CONNECT.
I downloaded the newest software, but that didn't seem to work. I tried other stuff that failed as well, finally, I tried a long shot.
Under the Network menu in Preferences there is the Service option. I originally had it set to UNIX, (since it's a BSDI system.) For the hell of it I changed it to something else. I decided to try Netcom, and it connected like a dream!
So that's my advice, try some of the other service settings. Maybe one of them will work.

I'm guessing that what made the difference in Tyric's case is that the UNIX setting also includes a script that essentialy waited for a "login" response from the host (think text-based BBS). It never got one from the ISP so it sat there and eventually timed out. The preset Netcom preference doesn't specify a script to be processed.

Or setup a new one specific to your ISP. You don't want to just randomly choose one of the preset ones in the list.

but I can't figure out how to create a new service.
