Memplug CF or Memplug SM
I'm want to purchase a memplug but am unsure as to which one CF or SM to get. I currently don't own either kind. Any suggestions? I will also be purchasing PIDirect.
Thanx

It is my understanding the the CF is faster, but has more battery drain than the SM. I personally like the SM better because the card is smaller. I have a copy of my backup that I keep in my wallet. If things keep going like they are now, I will probably have to get a second card for every day use and I would much rather carry a SM in my case than a CF.

I personally chose the CF adapter just because its what the PocketPC's use as well, so if I ever switch (heaven forbid), I'll have the memory cards for it as well. I dunno, just seemed more standard I guess.
i ordered a MemPlug SM and it should arrive today. I went with MemPlug SM because it is not as demanding on battery power as CF. I already have two, "power-drain" modules, namely Eyemodule2 and the CardAccess ThinModem, and I don't want a third. I change my batteries often enough as it is. as far as size goes, it didn't really factor in for me as I will be getting a Grinder Gear Expedition in the mail sometime this week and that should be able to hold almost anything visor related in it except for my Stowaway. Speed, while good, was not a deal breaker for me. So you will have to wrestle three maybe four options: size, speed, battery usage, and top memory size.

CF
I have both. I prefer CF because:
1) The CF card seems to protrude less than the SM and I can actually still use my Vaja Prism flip case with the CF model; I can't do that with the SM.
2) SM may have less of a memory drain on the visor, but I have a ton of CF cards from several digital cameras.
3) CF just seems sturdier to me. Doesn't take any more space in my bag, but feels like it won't break nearly as easily.

Get the version compatible with your other ditgital equipment. I lust after a certain Olympus digital camera and have a MiniJam which also uses SM, so I just purchased the sm MemPlug.

POTUS and mgizzi have good points. If you are already using one of the two, get the one you are already using. It would pointless to have to get two different cards for your various digital devices if you don't have to. But ethos said he didn't have any devices that used either of them. As far as the thinness of the SM card, I agree. But since I won't be doing much swapping of the card, its going to be a permanent resident in the MemPlug. So it won't be a factor. As far as the SM card protruding, it doesn't look all that bad. Maybe only half a mm.
Jason
Thanks folks for all the input. I guess I'm leaning towards the sm, because it consumes less power. Hopefully it will fit in my Prism EB Case.
Where did you buy your memplug?
One more question. Where are you folks buy your memplugs and how much? I am considering buying from Palmgear and getting the memplug with the 64mg for $150. Any thoughts?

A good place to check out is http://store.yahoo.com/aaronix/comflasmem.html.I belive I'm waiting a month but I belive CF is the way to
I bought my MemPlug and a 64 MB SM card from CDW.com. Great customer service. I was about to get PalmGear's MemPlug+32MB SM bundle that they sell for 100 bucks, but when I ordered it the MemPlug was on Backorder so I canceled it. I will be moving back to Kansas in a week and a half (aaaughhh, it's that soon
and I wanted at the very least a good backup module and a great deal of memory on the side. I found that CDW sold MemPlugs AND Smart Media cards so purchased them there. I would recommend getting the MemPlug from CDW and the SM card/CF card from either CDW or Newegg.com .
After posting this I remembered that CDW only sold MemPlug SM. If you want to get CF, though from your post it sounds like you are going with SM, then I think your only choice is Palmgear but I could be mistaken.

I'm currently using the MemPlug SM and I have Afterburner running at 42Mhz default. My applications don't seem to be slow, just a little bit than normal. So, do you see a lot of difference in the speed of a MemPlug SM and CF? let's say how fast a CF loads AvantGo or other applications compared to SM. Could you give me an aproximation of delay.
Thanks
Al
I just got the CF MemPlug and a 32 MB PNY card. When I remove the CF card or the Memplug module my Visor Resets. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? Or could it be that my CF Card is incompatible? Anyone having the same problem or have a solution?
By the way' Bestbuy has a $20 rebate going on PNY CF/ and S/M Cards.

I have CF because I've read tons of reviews, compairsons, and "torcher tests," much like the ones the performed on the Game Boy Advanced. I've heard people dropping these things down stairs, withstand temperatures that normal electronics would die and, and what impressed me the most was that a few people accidently put it though the washing machine when left in their pants pocket. All ran perfectly fine afterwards.

Duhh Never-mind on the request for help on the Memplug resets. I figured it out? You have to disable PiDirect before removing any CF cards from the memplug or before removing the MemPlug module from the Visor.
