-- Graphite Platinum question? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14178)

Posted by handspringer on 04-18-2001 05:58 PM:

Has anyone successfully exchanged a silver platinum for a graphite one because of the paint problem? I just got off the phone with them and they said they won't exchange colors. They also said paint wasn't covered in the warranty. I thought it was covered under "materials and workmanship". What do you think? Come on HS, the only way to fix the problem is to eliminate the problem.

Thumbs down Nope, nada, not even close.

No, they will not let you swap colors. I just got done with an e-mail conversation with Handspring, and they will not budge an inch.

In the conversation, they did tell me that they would exchange my silver Platinum for another silver do to the finish rubbing off. They said that eveything on the Visor is covered except a cracked screen.

I am getting ready to call customer care right now to set up the exchange, and will set myself up a reminder to call them again in November to do it again. That will be about 11 months from the time I bought my Platinum.

Does anybody know if the Graphite Platinum Visors have molded through color, or is the finish painted on like the Silver?

Update!

I just got off the phone setting up the exchange and, when I explained to the person on the phone what is happening and that I was planning on doing this again in November or so, she said that she could make an exception.

They are really not supposed to swap colors when they do an exchange, but I must have pushed the right buttons, and I should have a replacement next week!

Play hardball Handspringer - it worked for me!

Thumbs up Got a Graphite Platinum

I received the Graphite Platinum to replace my Silver one that the paint was rubbing off of.

It would appear that the finish is not painted on, although the surface is a rather flat black, almost like flat black paint. The front half of the case is a very flat finish, while the rear half of the case has a slightly different finish that is a bit shiny.

The case is molded in black plastic through, not grey like the silver Platinum.

I took the battery cover off and rubbed the edge of it with my fingernail and did not notice any difference in the surface appearance.

That's odd. I've heard a lot about paint rubbing off. Maybe I haven't had mine long enough. I take mine out of the case and put it back in numerous times, and I haven't witnessed any paint rubbing off yet.

Do you have a Silver or Graphite VPL?

My experience (you can read about that above) with a Silver VPL was that the paint rubbed off where the case came into contact with the flip lid (the one that comes with the unit). My co-worker is experiencing the exact same problem.

BTW - I am loving my Graphite VPL

Smile

Well, I called yesterday to exchange my silver VPL for another one due to the paint scratching off (in an odd place...on the front, near the top, between the Handspring logo and the word "Visor", but no problems at the frequent contact points) and was essentially offered a graphite with very little prompting. I prefer the silver and just clarified with the customer service rep. that I wanted to make sure she was sending a silver one, not a graphite. Her response was "Would you like to try a graphite instead?"

Either HS has changed their policy, or this particular rep was willing to make an exception. Or I guess she could have just had poor training

may be unethical...but what the hell

You should buy another visor (in the color of your choice). When it arrives, swap out the covers. Send the new visor back (with the faded paint) using the 30-day money back guarantee. Tell them that they sent the wrong color, but now you've changed your mind and you don't want it anymore. If they insist on charging you credit card, protest the charge with your bank, provide the bank proof that you returned the merchandise, which was sent to you in the wrong color. There you go...all fixed.

Before you all jump on my back and say what I've suggested is unethical, I've already stated such in the subject line, so no need to point this out again.

I am having my silver one replaced because of a screen problem and they refused to send a graphite after I asked three times. I guess it depends on the rep. you are talking to.

It could be because you are returning it for a screen problem, not the case problem.
