I just purchased a Visor Platinum and need to know what modem would be best for dialing into my corporate servers to download my Emails when I am on the road. Once I dial in with the modem will it automatically get through the firewalls or will I need to add additional software. Any help on this would be great.
Modem aside (thats the easy part), Depending on how your company is set up and the security in place, you may need to bribe you corporate networks person .. (I'm not kidding..) at least you may need to put a call into them as each company is different, they would have the answers. Possibly seek out other co-workers that are "palm" enabled and ask them what you need to do...

Check to see if your company's email can be accessed as a POP server. I access the mail on our MS Exchange server using normal mail clients at home and with my Minstrel, no problem. If it can be accessed that way, your IS person should be able to give you the POP and SMTP info no problem. You can even look for these settings yourself on your desktop machine, and just input the correct data in the correct places. Don't know if this solution applies to you though.

I use my regular internet connection at home to check my e-mail on our exchange server, but cannot get into it on my visor. I always get to the user name, then I get a java script error message. Has anyone used their visor to get on the exchange server web page and check mail?
No Java support
As far as I know, there isn't any Java support on the Palm platform, so the Exchange Server web page method of checking email won't work. You will need to find out if you can check your email via POP and use a program like MultiMail or the built in email app to check your mail.

Corporate solutions
From my experience, my company (GE) uses an encryption dongle to control access to the server. Basically, we dial in to a secure number on Compuserve, the authentication is script-based so I entered the script into the Visor's Network settings. There's a command for "prompt" and this is the point where I would enter in the encryption key code. Then it's a simple matter of configuring Multimail to connect to our IMAP servers to send/receive e-mail. We also use Palmscape for browsing, since it handles proxy servers.
And by the way, there is a Java VM out there for PalmOs. Look it up on Palmgear. Not sure if a web browser exists yet that can use it, tho.
Also, I recommend the Xircom Springport GlobalAccess modem.
I really wish Mobile Winfax worked under PalmOS 3.5....

I've had the same problems accessing my email with the Visor too. Our server does not support POP3 or IMAP4 for security reasons. We can only use MS Exchange settings. I've got Multimail Pro, but haven't figured out how to get it to conect to an exchange server. I really wanted to buy a modem springboard module, but don't see a need for it if I can't connect for email. Any suggestions?

It may run on MS-Exchange, but it still may be IMAP. One is the protocol (IMAP) and the other is the delivery mechanism. We use MS-Exchange exclusively as well, but the e-mail servers utilize IMAP4 protocol. Find the IP addresses for the sending and receiving servers (check the c:/windows/HOSTS file and the properties for Outlook, compare the name in the properties with the alias IP address in the hosts file)
Is this clear, or just technobabble?

You can check mail via an exchange server. The problem you may be having, (I have the same problem) is the exchange server is using secure password authorization.

Thanks for the reply. I've checked the lmhosts file and even put that into the Multimail Pro account profile, but it still won't sync to the account. Our IM folks disabled the POP3 and IMAP4 access. I tried the POP, IMAP and NNTP settings under MM Pro, but still can't get it to connect. I was able to sync with my desktop before and download the mail from it, but wanted to be able to pull in my mail through a modem.
Fleabag, how do you get MM Pro to work with secure password authorization? I don't think they support it yet. Thanks,
