Static Electricity
My Edge was always killing my computer. I solved my probelm by buying a static removing mat (looks like a small hand 5"x3")
that I grounded to my electrical socket. It worked great. Unfortunately, my Edge was stolen and I am now using my spare (deluxe).
I am going to hold off before buying my next PDA cause the deluxe works just fine. But, I really liked the metal case and small size of my Edge. I hope Handspring/sony/palm/whoever produces one that fixes this problem.
If you are having problems with your Edge or Vx then I recommend getting a static removing mat. I liked the mat I found at www.matdepot.com
And no, I don't work for mat depot, not married to anyone who does, etc.
I miss my Edge
I ran in to the same problem when I got my Platinum about 1 year ago. I too solved my problem by grounding my cradle, but using an anti-static wrist strap.

Hey I Figured This Out Too
Well it took me a while, but I noticed that my Visor was fine when the weather was warmer and the humidity up. Thats what tipped me off to the static idea. Now I just touch the visor to my metal computer case and no crashes
