Found a site that can translate Japanese to English, but it still doesn't make alot of sense. Try http://www.tranexp.com/ for a limited translation that isn't very readable...

Someone in the pdabuzz discussion group said that the card may not fully conform to cf standard and may just operate through the rather straitforward serial communications involved in compactflash and pcmcia. However I may be wrong. I will look into it further.

You know in my last post when I said I might be wrong. Well lets hope so. This picture is from his site and shows that excelent lovely adapter of his with a 64meg cf card. So if the pictures are not for the hell of it then his card cand handle cf memory and serial devices. I gotta see a translation of his site to see what else it can do or at the very least if I am deluding myself based on a picture I would like to know. My psion uses cf and I have some cf memory for it so this would be most excelent.

If it would not be more than $ 50-60, I would buy one. However, there has to be some software that enables me to run apps from the CF card (like CSpotRun etc. for the AxxPac (sp?)or at least a FileMover app). But I think if enough people would buy such a Springboard, somebody would come up with such Software.

This kind of thing is not for the faint-hearted. He has apparently used a PCMCIA to CF adapter as a base and made his own CF compatible springboard module, and then written his own software for it. He says that he has been sucessful in using the P-in compact PHS card (yes I read Japanese).

I was in Japan for a few weeks just a while ago, and I am almost disgusted at how far ahead they are in terms of wireless internet access. You can get a PC or CF card (like the one in the pictures) and that is all you need to connect to the internet, supposedly at 32K or 64K per second (depending on conditions). That means that (assuming your PDA has a type II CF slot or a pc card slot) you can have a very compact wireless internet machine. None of this non-sense about connecting to a separate cell phone. It's not even very expensive (comparable to a cheap cell phone plan in the us) and the cards themselves are generally quite cheap, since you have to activate an account when you buy one. I have seen the PC-Card version of this for like $25.

I have been searching for a similar service in the US, but nothing exists in my area -- I guess living in a small country has its advantages -- most of Japan is servicable for the PHS network now. I will definitely be getting one of these when and if I move back to Japan.

That said, I think he is just at the very beginning stages of being able to use this card. From what I gather he has just been able to do a few relatively simple things, and is a ways off from being able to use it for real internet access and the like.
