Whoh, whoh, whoh, whoh.. Z, I just thought of something you MIGHT want to advise purchasers. Here's background, I was fiddling with the cover on the back of the Prism the other day and noted that it slipped off the unit slightly more easily than my old Vdx. Now, if I have the design of this thing right, the flip cover attaches to a dummy cover like the existing cover, with the added hinge. It occurred to me, as you hold the newly installed flip cover assembly to be somewhat careful you DON'T ACCIDENTALLY REPLACE YOUR GRIP WITH THE VISOR TO THE LID. Depending on how well seated the cover is, it might not hold the weight of the unit, the unit slips away from the cover and lid and, well, you get the picture. Maybe a disclaimer statement or something advising users they, or friends with whom they share their Visor by saying, "here, take a look at this," and hand it off, NOT to allow the flip cover to be the only source of support. (Gawd, I can see kids swinging this thing until gravity and centrifugal force do their dirty work! If kids get their hands on a unit so equipped. Sure, you say NEVER, but, well KIDS???) And then there's the close friend: "Okay, now HOW do I hold this thing..." Slip. CRUNCH. Tears.
Bottom line: Sure, you'd like to think it's unthinkable, but, well, people have been more dim than that, so, with the cover and the hinge, REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN'T ASSUME USERS OR BORROWERS (HELL, EVEN A FEW OWNERS) REALIZE THAT THE COVER COULD SLIP AWAY FROM THE VISOR IF IT IS NOT SUPPORTED CORRECTLY.
But, heh heh, I'm gonna buy one anyway. Just as SOOON as you get the fixins' done for the Prism. Thanks!

One more thing: Flipped all the way to the rear, the lid's width will exceed the unit due to the unit's rear contours. So, it IS conceivable that your grip on the Visor might transfer unconsciously to the wider lid... thereby allowing the rear snap cover to be the only means of support and causing, as they say in Motor Trend: "Suddenly pistons are colliding with valves and all hell breaks loose..." If you can make the creative connection. (If not, read: your Visor makes for the floor at a gravitational rate.)
Wonder if there's a way to secure the rear cover more securely?

These images show the two modes of holding the flip cover. The first shows the cover flipped back but it rests on the backside of your hand. The second shows the cover flipped all the way to the back and resting in your palm.

I have been using one of our samples with my Visor for two months now and have never had a problem. I see your point about the Prism, but from my experience 95% of the time I never go through the extra step of seating the cover into my palm.

Our FlipCover is designed so that it can support the weight of the Visor. Still, by no means we will reccommend that someone swing their Visor from the cover, but in the event you are describing above I think people will realize that if they drop their Visor that it is their responsibility. But people like us who have steady hands can be comfortable knowing that the cover is strong enough to hold and not let go.

Question Expected ship date?

Hi Z, the pics look great! I can't wait to get mine. No seriously, I can't wait... please ship mine to the following address:

Ok, just kidding. Do you have an idea when our pre-orders would be shipping? Just curious. Thanks!

Dave

That DEFINITELY settles it. I'm in. *snicker* I can't believe you DID that with the flip cover, relying on the cover to hold it, but there it is hanging, no problem. (C'mon, you had a pillow or something beneath it, right? Hmmm?) Oh yeah, I'm definitely in. But, er, I own a Prism. Are Prism hinges and covers coming soon? gonna be available soon? Thanks!

Question

Does this fit with the EyeModule installed?

No. The hinge has to be attached to a standard-sized module that is flat on top, like the dummy that comes with the Visor.

No camera tricks, no hidden mirrors, no pillows, just some good ol' fashion mechanical snaps on the module. Like I said the Flip Cover will hold the Visor's weight. If you want to push its limits you can even hold it by the cover, swing it around, and dance a jig.

The Prism hinges are coming soon. We just got a date from our tooling house that we will receive those samples on Feb. 16th. As soon as we get those, we will start those preorders. I know all the Prism people are anxious, so we will try to keep to our dates as best as possible.

Prism Survey

As many of you already know we will be releasing the Prism flip covers for pre-order really soon. A large part of our effort has been to get a really good color match to the Prism, but perfectly matching a painted color to a molded plastic is indeed a hard task.

Eventually we will have exact matches, but we are curious here if it will be worthwhile to do an early release of the Prism flip covers with our existing colors.

Would you prefer a different color (Black, Ice, Blue, Orange, Green) to accent your Prism?

Or ..

Do you think that a Prism flip cover should only be offered in Prism cobalt blue?

So far the black accessories like the Minstrel modem look great in the PRISM. Putting the Ice cover from my VDX on the front of the PRISM made it look ugleee! You usually can't go wrong with basic black.

Posted by pjs on 02-03-2001 05:56 PM:

black is fine

I would prefer a contrasting black cover over one that comes close to Cobalt Blue. Besides, all the Cobalt Blue is eventually going to wear off of these Prisms leaving them black.

I'd go with black.

Question Status update?

Any word on availability of these?

The FAQ at http://www.flipcover.com still says:
"When we are ready to ship (aprox. mid Feb), we will
contact you so you can complete your order by providing
your billing information."

Also a post from late Jan stated that they expected samples
to arrive from the tooling house on 2/16.

So it sounds like a great time for an update!

Flip Covers are here

We recieved 250 Flip Cover samples last week in all of our colors and received our first samples for a Prism Flip Cover.

The 250 Flip Covers are not intended for fulfilling pre-orders, instead they are to send out to websites and magazines for review / articles. In fact, you can expect a review on Visor Central pretty soon . Only after we send out to all our reviewers, then we will use the remainder of the initial stock to begin contacting our first pre-orders.

We will soon get our first production order (hopefully next week) and begin shipping shortly to everyone.

BTW, for the Prism folk out there the Prism Flip Cover is amazing. However, for now we only have it in black. You can expect to see a pre-order option for that on our site really soon.

Thank you to everyone for their patience, I think you'll all see that this is worth the wait.

Wink

Just got an e-mail to make my pre-production order, and I did. Can hardly wait to receive it. Thanks Flip Cover.

Exclamation

This is in response to Z' comments posted 12-19-00...

Your comment "As far as colors go, ATL has already been shooting all the Visor colors in their molds so we already have an exact match. Since our FlipCovers will be molded with the colors and not painted on, there is no need to worry about rubbing or discoloration." is not a true comment.

I just received my blue flipcover and the blue does not match the blue of the Visor DX. It's close but not close enough.

Is this the case will all the colors or just the blue?

I believe "EXACT MATCH" is in the eye of the beholder......

I should also mention that even though the color is not exact, the product is still AWESOME. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars still. This cover is much better then the unit Tactilis makes.

http://www.tactilis.com/

Just keep in mind the color may not be exact. Maybe the ice would be a better choice for the colored visors as they still have an ice colored back.

I have one ice visor and one black Visor. I ordered two flip covers, one ice and one black. Since my girlfriend mostly uses the ice visor, with a slim leather case, I experimented a little.
I took the front cover of the ice one and attached it to the black springboard module dummy. So now I have an all black Visor with a clear flip cover. It looks great.

Thumbs up

FLIPCOVER IS AWESOME!!!! I received an email from Zee about our discussion on the colors not matching the Visor DLX colors.

The "Stand-Up" guy that he is, he is taking care of my issue. All companies should stand behind their product as Zee of FlipCover does.

This is the one and only cover for Handspring Devices!!!!!

Keep up the good work Zee.

Talking Flip Cover

I got my flip cover for my Visor Prism today. I got the adapter to attach it to my 8 meg expansion module and it works great. Good job.

Thumbs up

I just got my FlipCover today, and all I can say is "fan-freaking-tastic"!, but I could not find where to order the module adapters on the site. I use a backup module, and would prefer to keep it installed all the time. I guess I'll contact them.
