-- Don't need sixpac if your phone has modem! (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=5345)
Just to clarify things here,
if your mobile phone already has a full modem in it, e.g. the Timeports, most high-end nokias, siemens S25, etc. then you DON'T NEED the sixpack to use it - you DO need a bit of software called IrLink from IS/complete (www.iscomplete.org) that lets you map your modem comms to IR and you are set - no
cables, nothing!!
PLEASE READ their README for important instructions for VISOR users!!!
P.S. I have not personally tried this, but there is no reason why it should not work.
Dave
That is: if your phone has a modem AND an active IR port. From what I understand, those are harder to come by in the U.S.
(A lot of phones here, I understand, have a IR window with nothing "live" behind it.)
Besides the Timeport, which phones fit the bill with service in the U.S.?

Ah good point - I am in europe and a LOT of phones now have full modem spec.
Can't really comment on US.

The high-end Nokias in North America generally do not have IR capability unfortunately. However, some of the newer phones from other companies do support this function, and a few of them are available now in the US, with the GSM Motorola Timeport being one of them.
We North Americans are definitely behind on this one.

Hmm...
i have a USA Sprint PCS Timeport (P8167) and I see no IR port - it does have a serial port for connecting to my 'puter though.
Am I just missing it?
the sprint phone is here: http://s4.sprintpcs.com/store/show_...?sku=STARTTPKIT
if there is no ir port, can I still connect directly to the phone with a serial cable?
Unfortunately, if no IR, then you are back to needing a sixpac or similar - there is no serial port on the VISOR apart from the IR one.
Seems we Europeans can gloat about SOMETHING!!

Hate to admit it, but Europe pretty much kicks America's butt when it comes to all things wireless. The cellular infrastructure in America is bogged down by politics and legacy equipment.
I know, I know!
In places like Norway, they can pay for things by punching in numbers into their cell phones and accessing their ATM accounts.
Europe has all the cool telephone stuff.

I happened into Circuit City yesterday (yikes), and looked at some of the Nokia phones. It looked like that the 6100 series had an IR port. The salesperson didn't know squat (no surprise)... I surfed to the Nokia site and didn't learn much there either. If anyone is successful in getting this setup to work (in the US), I'd really be interested in knowing the details (phone model, etc.)
Thanks
Jon,
The Nokia 6100 series (in the US) has the IR covering, but there is no IR apparatus behind it. Basically, it's only there so they don't have to produce two separate cases for US and European markets. Sorry ;-)
Dave,
You Europeans can boast about LOTS of great things - the Euro, Mad Cow Disease, the French...
but really, we Americans are just jealous of your wireless toys.

I am an American in Europe, and I can tell you, the Europeans sure have alot to boast about. Fortunately, one of them is not school shootings!

Somebody check declana to see if he's bleeding.
So let me get this straight. There, currently, isn't a way to make this happen in the US??
It can work, but you must be able to find the right phone. They are available, but are just very expensive and difficult to find.

Don't know anything about the American versions, but Nokia 6110 is not 100% IRDA-compatible, so it's not the best choice. I tried Nokia 8210 (7110, 8850, 8810 would work, too) and Siemens S25, they are OK.
But you need IRLink 1.5 to use your IRport on the Visor. Visit their site (www.iscomplete.com), there is a lot of info about this topic in the manual of IRLink.
