-- Win98 USB Sync (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2057)
I just got my VDX yesterday. I think it is great. But I cannot get it to sync. At all. My USB port is NOT on-board (built in to the motherboard), it is in a PCI card. Anyway, I tried the sync on my brother's computer (his does have an on-board USB) and it still didn't work. I have tried a soft-reset of the Visor, I have tried restarting the Hotsync Manager, I have tried removing the USB port from the control panel (forcing the machine to re-install the USB drivers), I have tried the registry modification suggested in a previous message, I have tried everything I can think of.
Basically, I put the Visor in the cradle and push the sync button. I know the palmtop is connected because pushing the cradle's button causes the palmtop to try to sync (so it MUST be connected and seated correctly in the cradle). But then it says it is trying to connect to the desktop. It sits there for about 30 seconds, then says that it could not connect.
It seems that several others are having problems like this, but none of the solutions they have tried have seemed to work. Any ideas?
Ely
I hope i'm not insulting your intelligence if you've already tried this, but it was my problem. When booting, enter the BIOS and enable USB Interface if it is not already enabled.
Good luck
Yeah, I checked that already, and it is configured to use USB.
You're running Windows98 right? Not 95 or NT? Also, make sure your USB ports are working by clicking once on My Computer, hold down ALT and press ENTER. Go to the Device Manager tab and make sure that Windows 'sees' your USB ports and that they're not flagged by a yellow or red warning icon.
Also, make sure that the Palm Desktop and HotSync software is set to monitor Local USB. If it's set for serial only, you won't sync.
Hope some of this helps.

Yeah, I checked that. The computer "sees" the USB port "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller" and the "Root Hub". (The USB I am using is NOT on-board. It is a PCI card.) Anyway, I also have PNP OS turned "off" in the BIOS, for what its worth.
I just don't get it.
You've made sure the HotSync manager on the desktop IS set to monitor Local USB? (Right-click on the HotSync icon in the System Tray and make sure Local USB is checked.)
You might try something else that could possibly narrow your problem down. Place your Visor in its cradle, open up the Device Manager again and scroll down to the USB section. Expand the USB tree so you can see the devices like the Root Hub, etc. Then, press the HotSync button on the Cradle. In a few seconds, you might see the USB tree automatically close... when it does, quickly open it back up and see if "Handspring Visor" is listed on your USB. If it is, then its a Palm Desktop / HotSync software problem and not the Visor or the PC.
Again, I hope this might help.

Yeah, the Hotsync Manager is set to Local USB. Actually, that is the ONLY one checked.
I tried what you suggested. I expanded the USB tree in the Dev. Manager and then tried a Hotsync. It didn't close the tree, and neither did it dispay anything saying "Visor" (or anything new for that matter). Anyway, it still didn't work.
I've tried re-installing the software (both USB device managers and the Hotsync software) multiple times. I have no more ideas...
If your 'tree' didn't collapse and then show the Handspring Visor (my that sounds strange out of context) then your PC isn't seeing the Visor on the USB... but I guess you already figured that. Perhaps it's a defective cradle? I know you said the button activated the Visor, but the problem could be after that point. Check the USB cable for any kinks or pinches. If you can find someone in your area who has a visor, you might try their cradle and see if it works? I'm really at a loss. It looks like you're going to have to call Handspring.

I've the same situation as Elyjah, I try the method that wrp suggesting. I open device manger and see the Root Hub, then I press the HotSync button. In a few seconds, I see the USB tree automatically close, but when I quickly open the it. I can't see "Handspring Visor"is listed, Is this a software problem, and How can I solve it?
Hope wrp or somebody can help me solving this problem
I had the SAME problem...I got it to work though. Maybe this is the problem with yours and maybe not, but it won't sync up if you are overclocking with Afterburner. If you are, change the clockspeed back to normal, and then try I think it will work.
Dear Belthasar
I don't install Afterburner. But I still have the same question in USB hotsync. I have install the hackermaster, But I don't install any hack program.
Is it a Software problem or hardware problem?

I had the same problem...no USB synch...
tried everything I could find on this web site and on the Handspring web site...still no workey.... finally called visor tech support... he had me run "regedit" and delete a certain driver that was buried several levels down. (after a 40 minute hold time)...I am using a Toshiba 4060cdt laptop...
I guess I forgot to say that the tech support fix worked and I have been "hotsynching" to my hearts content!!

I also try the manner deleting the item below the /HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Enum/USB/ROOT_HUB, But it still doesn't work. But When I delete the item, And press the button, I find the system starting to build device database. But can not recognize the device. And in the device manger will appear the unknown device, what happen about this?
Someone say using WIN98 SE will be okey. But mine still don't work. Someone say can find USB driver update from microsoft site, But I can't find that. What should I do? Hoping someone can help me...
Thanks
I had this problem at a client site and it baffled me for awhile. I could not hot sync with the cradle connected to a laptop nor a desktop. I could however start a hotsync using a different Visor (mine). I finally did a hard reset and things began to work.
Just had the same problem and came up here looking for help. The post above mine about a hard reset gave me the hint I needed. I'd tried rebooting PC, reinstalling software, checking settings, checking cable. But I never did a pin-reset. Did that and everything was OK. I can now sync again. Didn't lose any data. (I guess I did a Soft Reset.) Seemed to have done the trick.
You guys are the best. I have been trying to HotSync for three days now with no luck. After following the advice to check out my BIOS setup I found out my USB ports were disabled (I'm not sure why). As soon as I changed that I was up and running. I have already backed up my files and installed the 5 games off the handspring disk. Who needs technical support when the community at visorcentral is there to give advice?
I love my GVD and now that I see how fast and easy it is to HotSync, I love it even more. Thanks for the help!
I just got my Visor 3 days ago. I'm having the same problem--I can't get it to hot sync. I've tried the things mentioned in this list but so far to no avail. One of the messages suggested going into device manager and seeing if the USB tree collapses after hot syncing... I tried this and it collapsed but when i reopened it there was no handspring device listed. What can I do to correct this? I haven't been able to get through on their support line.

I just tried the suggestion to go into Regedit, etc... and it worked!!!
Ha Ha Ha
I have solved my problem, After I try evervy thing i can do, I thought it my be speed problem, the Desktop may not sync. with my Visor. So I used the Afterburn. And Slow down the speed with my Visor. Now it can work correctly. Ha Ha Ha..., I am so happy. And thank everyone in the board.
