well, hello everyone. i should be getting my blue visor dlx in a few hours :-) and am interested in the thinmodem so i can keep connected but i have a problem. we cancelled our dial-up isp for cable, and i am not interested in paying per month for limited use on the pda. has anyone had success with any of the free isp's that are still out there, and how did you set it up. since i have cable, i won't be able to dial in to anything (for passwords etc.) anyone in the same situation? thanks for any help.

btw.. visorcentral.com is great, keep up the work!

I too have recently bought a thinmodem and also have cable ISP. So what I did was get an ATT worldnett ISP account for only $5/month. This gives you 150 hours/month of usage. Thats a great deal, the best deal going. ATT worldnett is premium service, fast, reliable and lots of local access numbers along with a 1800 access number that charges a very reasonable .10 a minute. The free ISP are slow, unreliable connections with limited access numbers. They are not supported on PDAs unless you go through the trouble of obtaining the secret username and password codes. Now I am connected to the web and have multimail for email retreival for only $5/month. I am a happy clam.

Have you tried the newer version of the Bluelight.com internet service? They restrict you to 25 hours a month but that should be plenty I would think for lite usage. That's assuming it works on the Visor, I haven't tried that one yet.

Popup-ads with AT&T

AT&T looked real good for $4.95/mo, so I downloaded the software and started to install it. I read that there is an advertisment bar that you cannot close. If you try to close it it will disconnect you. Is this different than Netzero or Juno, which are free? Bummer!!!

there is no advertising bar on my visor or on my desktop with the i495 att service.

Cool, well I'll have to give AT&T dialup a try after all and see about the ad window issue. In the paragraph before you push the "I Agree" button (the paragraph I usually don't read), they explicitly state that thei nav bar has ads, and that closing the ad window or bypassing it will log you off. Wierd. I'll try it though, thanks!

1. you are saying that the $5.00 at&t service throws ads at you (sometimes?)
2. is there special software like free isp's?
3. where can i check this out?
4. how does it stand up against other isp's on a pda...

since this will be specifically used on my visor, i want to make sure it will work good.

The AT&T Worldnet i495 package does appear to require a dreaded navigation bar, as they call it. Their standard service (requires no navbar), is 14.95/month for up to 150 hrs.

There are some instructions for configuring the Windows Dial-up client to access WorldNet (IP addresses, etc). I'm not sure if these would work with the i495 plan or not. That would depend on whether the navbar is controlled by the server side or not.

I'd suggest reading through the Price Plans and Billing FAQ's. There's some important stuff in there, like no concurrent connections, etc

I guess there realy is no such thing as a free (or cheap) lunch!

thanks for the great info mark. i read the terms and FAQs and am a bit skeptical. it looks like this is not much different from a free isp, except it is from at&t, and probably more reliable. here are some interesting quotes from the faq...

The ATT 495 plan works perfectly on my Visor Dlx. I dont ever remember any of this issue about advertising or a navigation bar. To be honest, I have only used the service from my desktop twice. I have used it on my Visor daily for about 1 wk without any trouble. There is no navigation bar or advertising on my Visor browsers...Avantgo or Browse-it (which came with the Thinmodem).

To set up your Visor with the ATT worldnett service to obtain the numerical code that represents your username and password. You will need to enter these number/letter sequences in the Network settings. To get this code you need to call up customer service and potentially wait up to 30 minutes on hold until a rep gets to you.

I use Juno on mine and I love it. I haven't gotten a busy signal yet, and there are a lot of access numbers. This is a problem with Worldnet. I couldn't find any numbers for my area. Just use RASspy to get the real loginname and password and you're golden.
