Red face

I have ActionNames on my Prism, and yesterday I downloaded AnProxy so that I could access ActionNames via my address button. Everything was fine, until I used the find icon to search for something on my visor, and I got a fatal alert "TextMgr.c,Line:751, NULL source".

After trying this several times with the same result (and doing soft-resets), I decided to reformat my address button back to the built-in address book. However, now I can't FIND my prefs icon to make the change! It's listed in the "info" category, but it doesn't show up on my screen.

I am trying to avoid having to do a hard-reset since I have done a lot of work since I last hot-synched. Any suggestions?

I don't know how it would get there, but try checking in the Unfiled category... you just never know (remember, Unfiled does not show up when tapping the Application icon repeatedly to scroll through the various categories).

ummm...why didn't you just map ActionNames to the button in your preferences? Why the download of 'AnProxy'? It sounds like your problems started when this app was installed. What in the world does AnProxy do?!?!

Mark Eagle, thanks for the idea, but I've already tried it without any luck!

I thought after reading the info about AnProxy (listed in Iambic's 3rd party software section) that I needed that program to map ActionNames to the hardware button.

According to the web-site, AnProxy 1.0 "allows you to use the hardware buttons to launch different views in ActionNames 4.05 or greater. For example, you can assign the Address hardware button to launch ActionNames to the Contacts view.

AN Proxy is free to use and licensed under the GNU GPL ."

I am now thinking about just deleting the AnProxy app (listed as AN Address on my prism) and seeing if my preference icon shows up . . . why is it I only seem to forget to back up my visor when a backup is needed?!!

An Proxy

Reconnect,

I've got An Proxy (address button) mapped to my Prism with no problem.

Delete An Proxy will result in the default address button returning to normal.

Also, there is a tag line at the web site for the "an proxy" buttons that you can only load two of them, just in case you loaded more than two by accident.

Regarding the preferences, are you using any other launcher program then the one your Prism came with? or if you loaded more than one of the proxies it might cause a loss of the preferences.

Well, I ended up deleting AnProxy, and the default address button returned . . . . although it's had a few hiccups which I think is related to the order of the names -- often I have to re-sort the list to have it in alphabetical order -- but it seems to have gotten better with time.

So, AnProxy worked for you, huh? I wish it had for me too. I use the launcher which came with my Prism. And I don't seem to have multiple proxies.

By the way, my preferences icon still did not appear even after I deleted AnProxy. I'm thinking of checking with Handspring TA to see if they have any ideas

There must be some sort of conflict going on within the address book applications regarding the sorting of names in Action Names. I'd suggest checking under the preferences menu (Action Names) and see if there is a difference against the default address book. If your sorting on Last Names first then the default address book should mirror that preference as well. I'm perplexed by this because I've got about 800 contacts and never had any sequencing problem.

Regarding the lost Preferences Icon - I'm not much help here you'll probably have to reload the Palm software in order to get it to reappear. If you just reinstall the desktop software it will probably reappear and you wouldn't have to hard reset the Prism. If you go this route, force the conduit to have the Handheld overwrite the Desktop because you might get duplicates of all your contacts because of the desktop thinking it's a clean install.

One other possible suggestion although I've never tried this: go into your desktop and go to Palm/Backup/ folder and look for the Saved_Preferences.prc file and double click it to reinstall it. This might get the icon back on the launcher. At worst case, you might have to reset some of your preferences but since you can't get to them at the moment - it's not that big of a deal.

Good luck!.

PS if the preferences are not loaded on the Prism this also might be causing some of the sorting issues within AN. The Palm OS doesn't like core programs to be missing and this is definitely a core program.

Cool good news!

Thanks for everybody's help! I've finally got some good news . . . I never got around to calling Handspring tech support (mostly procrastination), but think I've figured most of it out.

In terms of the preferences app, I discovered how to acccess it even without my icon. Although I had been focusing on ANproxy as the problem, I had also installed AutoLock around the same time (security program requiring a PIN number to access visor info). While I was installing the newest version, I noticed a button at the bottom of the screen labeled "System Prefs". Clicking on that takes me immediately to my prefs!

In regards to the address sorting problems, I think you were correct RSGMOOSE. With AnProxy, I had a preference which changed the default sorting of the Address Book. Rather than worrying about the address book, since I've finally found my system preferences (yeah!), I've just remapped my address button to another view of ActionNames with their proprietary address function selected.

The only problem remaining is that I still get the fatal alert "TextMgr.c,Line:751, NULL source" when searching for something, although oddly enough, not as frequently or as early in the search process as in the past. Hopefully it will continue getting better till it disappears!
