Exclamation USB/Pro Hotsync Warning?

It has been explained to me that when a USB cradle is used to Hotsync the Pro, the results are inconsistent. Apparently, people have experienced devastating errors when using this cradle: locked out of their Pro; Pro is wiped clean of all information; etc.

Ive been using a serial cable just to be on the safe side but this is supposedly a problem unique to the Pro. Has anyone else heard about this?

Haven't heard of it before. Where did your information come from?

An acquaintance works for Franklin Covey. When I told her about my new purchase she warned me and suggested that I buy a serial cradle from an office supply store. She explained that her store has received several calls about this and that Handspring is aware of the problem.

I haven't heard about it .. nor experienced it. I've had the Pro for several months now and so sync quite regularly so I have my mail (and AvantGo channels handy :-) ). Are there any particular OSes or conditions that it occurs under so I can try it?

There have been similar reports with the USB cradles on the m505 Palm devices. My experience is that it's related to USB hardware on the motherboards that's not properly static shielded. Static is *not* your friend. I had my Visor Edge constanty reset itself on me. After I had a static shield mat put in my office the problem went away.

Serial cables, IIRC, are designed with static shielding and better grounding. That may be why you don't see the same problem.

Personally I just ground myself out before I touch the USB cradle, never had a problem since.

YMMV of course.
