Loss of handheld data combined with out of memory error message on Palm Desktop

I use a Visor Edge with Palm Desktop software 4.0.1 on a Mac G3/OS 9.2.1, with a serial cradle and HotSync Manager 3.1 (don't laugh, some of us don't have the money to keep upgrading...) and boy, aren't I glad to find a website dedicated only to Visors, apparently now considered a vintage handheld on most other support websites...I have sifted through hundreds of postings on various websites without finding a solution.

Here is the story: a while back, I started getting a error message when opening my Palm Desktop. I get an "out of memory" error and the sotware doesn't open. The back then still Handspring support website suggested increasing the memory allocated to the application. I tried that but it didn't work. So I have been unable to hotsync for a while. I also tried to install the software on another more performant Mac and copy the user file but I get the same out of memory error.

What was bound to happen happened: recently my Visor acted as if it was on (the light was on) but I had no screen. Before I got to figuring out what the problem was the battery went dead and I lost all my data.

I tried to re-set the hotsync settings as I rememebred them but I must not have them right because it can't find the connection (I remember having flow control issues with the serial cradle).

So I am back to trying to fix the memory problem. Can someone tell me :

1. how to fix my Palm desktop memory problem: can I purge the desktop file without opening the software?
or
2. how to set my hotsync settings right but can I hotsync if the Palm Desktop is out of memory?
or
3. can I somehow reinstall everything not losing my user file?

I'd hate to have to manually update the file I I uploaded all my contacts 4 years ago.

Thanks for any help!
