-- Hackmaster and Prism problems (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9917)
I will be receiving my Prism any day now. I've never owned a PDA before, but the various hacks that are available have got me curious.
I read on some other post that the Prism has had problems crashing while some hacks or Hackmaster was used on it. Has anyone had problems like this? Which hacks should I avoid?
kpma,
I'm in the same boat my prism should be here anytime now
and I was wondering the same thing
Vinced
BatteryMeter Hack doesn't crash the Prism, but it doesn't add the meter either.
Here is a list of hacks I use on my Prism that have given me no problems:

Also note that the ? and + icons in the Hackmaster app are distorted in Palm OS 3.5 (which the Prism uses). Everything still works though.

I use the following:
MiddleCapsHack
CastToggleHack
AppHack
TealEcho
Phlegm Hack
Uptime Hack
Chrono Hack
I haven't been able to get FontHack to work. It crashes every time. Someone said in another thread that he had no problem with it, so go figure. If anyone has any hints about this one, I'd appreciate it.

Font hack crashing
Where does it crash? When you open an app that uses an installed font, or when you try to alter the setup in Hackmaster itself?
I go into Hackmaster, choose a font and check enable. As soon as I leave Hackmaster, it crashes. When it reboots, if I answer yes to "Do you wish to enable hacks" it crashes immediately again. I short, I can't run Hackmaster with FontHack enabled. I've tried running it without any other hacks enabled, and it still crashes. I use Chrome 1.1 (which changes the default colors). It seems a bit unstable, so I tried to disable that, but that didn't work either (although it's not entirely clear just how you disable it). The next step I guess is to take all other hacks and Chrome off my machine altogether; I'll see when I get a chance. It couldn't be the particular font I choose, could it?
Thanks for the tips.

I use the following hacks on my Prism, without problem
LeftHack,
FindHack,
LaunchEmAppHack. (This comes with the Launch'Em 3 beta 9 program, which is a great launcher, from http://www.synsolutions.com; it supports color, and can be customised well.)
Since I'm new to the Palm OS, can someone also tell me if trying all these cool hacks will leave bits and pieces all over my OS like so many utilities do on my Mac? If so, are there any recommendations to keep my Visor from filling up with useless files?
Thanks to all who have replied so far - some really useful info!
Reason I asked...
...is because I use FontHack a lot on my Deluxe. I used Gotham which is a narrower font, so that I can have more text on the screen...I've found fonts with small or bigger heights tend to screw the system up more.
How do you have the hack configured (which programs? launcher? All?) and with which font?
I've had to do some hard resets recently and my restores were not always complete, although the configuration data for FontHack was backed up, some of the programs that used modified fonts weren't. This caused a crash every time I tried to enter ANY program that used a modified font.
If you set a 3rd party font as a default for the entire system, you might try doing only selected apps, or trying out another font. The other solution I could think of is that the font is just plain missing (forgot to restore after a hard reset?) and the hack's config file is looking for it and crashing.
To reset the hack's config file, you have to kill a .pdb called AppFontData2 with creator tag of sfh2, or simply go into the config screen of the hack in Hackmaster and choose the "Reset All" button.
Goyena, you did it, it works! I removed AppFontData2 as suggested (I had to do it by hand with Z'Catalog), and after that it worked without a hitch. I too liked Gotham on my Palm, and was sad to live without it. Now between Chrome and FontHack, my Prism is a thing of beauty
. Many thanks for the tip.
=D Great! I had just wanted to test out FontHack to have some fun, and went through Triumph (ancient typewriter), Laika (Funny "Cyrillic) and Chop Suey just to freak out people who'd play with my palm. Later I found out how cool fonts like Gotham and Alpha (less batty, but more boring than Gotham) kick butt when you want a lot of text on the screen, like with MobileDB and ThinkDB and even long calendar entries.
I'm jealous...I want a prism too! Only got a Visor..don't even know why I read this thread. Good thing I did. Later...
Interesting name...eto russkii?

Another option
or try PrefMgr...it does a better job of sorting out which prefs are really orphans and which aren't. PrefEd lists a lot of the Visor extensions as not belonging to anybody.
PrefEd does have an added "advantage" of letting you view the preference entry.
