Question

I was playing with the store demo, but couldn't find a backlight anywhere. Is there one? If so how do you trigger it?

At Handspring's site there is a user guide that will tell you what you need to know about the Visor.

The backlight button is also the power button. You just press the button a little longer and it will come on. To turn it off, you do the same thing.

Also, unless you've gone into Preferences/Buttons and changed it, the default action for dragging the stylus from the bottom of the Graffiti area to the top of the screen is to turn the backlight on or off.

The default backlight setting is pretty awful compared to the Palm III series. It's a negative image. The screen goes black and the letters are illumated. This is arguably better in pitch black darkness, it's useless in general low-light settings.

Fortunately you can reverse the negative image setting by going to an application where you can write, like Memo Pad. Draw the shortcut symbol (the cursive lower-case L), tap twice to make a period, then draw numeral 8 on the number side of the silkscreen. Weird, but it works.

Actually it works with one exception. If you've imported a user profile from previous Palm, you won't be able make this change. You'll have to do a system backup with BackupBuddy or the backup springboard, do a hard reset, make the change, then reinstall your data.

Actually, I believe the default for the full-screen pen stroke is to activate Graffiti Help.

By default the full-screen pen stroke evokes the Graffiti help screen. You can change the default to activate the backlight by going to Applications|Prefs|Buttons|Pen. Then tap the drop-down menu "Graffiti Help" and change the option to "Backlight."

D'oh. I must have done that and then forgot.
