Oh and a separate SD slot a la Handera.

Good idea? Or too splintered of a strategy?

edited for clarity

Solo: $150 w/cradle; 33MHz; 2MB RAM; OS 3.5.2; monochrome; plastic case
Deluxe: $250; choice of colors; 33MHz; 8MB RAM; OS 3.5.2; monochrome; plastic case
Prism: $350; choice of colors; 33MHz; 10MB RAM; OS 3.5.2; 16-bit color (iPaq quality); plastic case
Edge: $350; choice of colors; 33MHz 8MB RAM; OS 3.5.2; monochrome; metal case
Color Edge: $450; choice of colors; 33MHz; 10MB RAM; OS 3.5.2; 16-bit color (iPaq quality); metal case

Or drop everything, mass produce the hell out of the color edge to bring the price down to $250-$300, and stay there. Add higher resolution as soon as financially possible, etc. The key is cost. Handspring is going to (and has started to) piss people off with high prices.

I'd hope not. He'd be a pecker if he was. Oh, that's me, er....nevermind.

No, I'm talking about visibility (although, how well can the human eye distinguish between 4096 colors and 65536 on a 2"x2" screen?).

Don't forget the VDx or slightly smaller form-factor

That was the point I forgot to re-make when I edited for clarity. Any advances to a color device with an internal springboard slot would REPLACE the prism. I still think the idea of releasing a platinum as a separate device is ridiculous.

Somebody in marketing got a nice bonus for that idea....

Joe Consumer got a bonus, too. He probably wasn't expecting to get bent over when he bought the deluxe.

To be fair, the deluxe is still functional. I can see releasing the plat as a more cost effective way for power users to feel like they're keeping up, and keeping the deluxe around because it does just fine as a PIM. But OS 3.5 isn't any more difficult to use than OS 3.1. Now Handspring is having to fumble around trying to retire the deluxe and putting the plat in its place. Looks bad.

Hmm the difference between your Edge and Color Edge is just $50, but between your Deluxe and Prism is $100... IMHO the Edge should cost about the same as the Prism, $350-$375. I'd also probably sell the basic Visor with a 16MHz CPU and 8MB RAM, instead of 33/2. Then again I never did well in my high school marketing class...

Good point about the edge. I re-edited my first point. I'm sticking with my solo, though.

Some ideas for configurations of a "Prism II". The assumption is that active matrix diplays can't fit into the Edge form factor for a while

Option A
Active matrix display
ARM processor
Palm OS 5
SD slot
SB slot
VDX or smaller form factor

Option B
Same as above but with buit-in wireless
Original Prism form factor

Option C
All features of A and B, but Handspring liceneses the technology that Blackberry uses (RIM?) to allow for a VDX form-factor!

All options in metal cases

Option A - $450
Option B - $450
Option C - $550

Can you talk more about how the silent alarm works? I was hoping there was a "switch to silent mode" in preferences somewhere, so that all alarms were switched to the LED. If it only works in DB+, that sucks, b/c I use DB4, so I'm SOL on the silent alarm altogether??

Help?
