-- Visors and screen streaking? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=473)

Question

For those of you who have received your Visors, are you seeing a lot of streaking on your screen? I am noticing quite a bit on mine and was wondering if it is a faulty unit or if this is the same streaking problem that I have heard of on Palm III units. I downloaded StreakHack, but it did not appear to make any difference. Thanks in advance for letting me know!

Question

I'm new to the whole PDA thing, so I'm not familiar with the streaking you refer to. Do you mean that there are actually lines across the screen that stay there all the time?

The steaking occurs when there are long black vertical lines on the screen. In the background you can see a lighter version of those lines extended from the top of the screen to the bottom. It is extremely annoying! So far it is my only complaint about an otherwise excellent product.

Question

I thought all LCDs had this problem?

I don't have any streaking at all on mine. I've checked several apps and I have noticed any shadowing or streaking. In what specific incidence to you see it? Is it there all of the time or only in certain places? I'll check mine if you can give me more details.

Gameboys got those lines quite a bit.. and I mean QUITE. Hopefully they don't get like that because the whole line of pixels is pretty much wiped out.

There is some streaking, but it isn't noticeable or annoying unless you turn the contrast way up. The screen is great though.

The streaking occurs on my Visor in any app that has strong vertical lines. I am probably just being picky. I never had streaking on my Pilot 5000, so it stands out for me, but I'll probably get used to it. For 8meg I can deal with it!

Exclamation

The stinkin' thing better not have any streaking when I get it! That was my biggest beef about the IIIx -- that goofy streaking thing that the V didn't have at all. Handspring told me, and I quote, "the screen is using TDF screen technology, it is very similar to a Palm V and better than the Palm IIIx."

I know get onto shaky "legal" ground on this one, but "better than the IIIx" tells me "no streaking". Palm kind of fixed their problem with a software patch (OS 3.1.1). So if the stupid thing streaks, how is it better than the IIIx?

If mine streaks, I might be either holding out for a color machine, or checking with TRG for an 8Mb upgrade to my IIIx... I was so hoping for a V-esque, streak-free screen though...

We'll see. My card hasn't been charged yet, but I think I ordered mine somewhere around 9/18... Please, Lord, let it not streak!

My IIIx LCD has no streaking (using PalmOS 3.3 since yesterday).

There might be some LCD production tolerances, but I'm sure HS will iron it out in the near future.

Like I said, the streaking is only noticeable when you turn the contrast up too high. With normal contrast the streaking will be either very light or nonexistant. I didn't notice it until I saw this thread and remembered to look for it in the calendar views. There I turned up the contrast to see it.

I'm not sure that I would have even found it. I have to turn the contrast almost all the way to black to see the lines. It's so dark by then that I can't hardly see the calendar. If that's what we are calling streaking, I don't see what the problem is. At that contrast level, it reminds me of trying to read my old Palm 5000 in the dark....

Unhappy

OK, after reading these posts I'm convinced my Visor is faulty to some extent. Even on VERY light contrast I still see very distinct streaking. Like I said before I can get used to it, but it is definitelly there and always visible at any contrast setting. Other than that I have no complaints.

Wink

Chazz,

From the Marketspeak-to-English dictionary:

"very similar to X and better than Y" = somewhere between X and Y

;-)

My IIIx has slight streaking which is mainly dependant on my contrast setting. This is common to most LCD based displays, my Sega Game Gear did it, my Avigo did it, my Casio A-20 does it, and even my Thinkpad 600 does it on occasion depending on the color scheme of what I'm looking at.

Were did you see Handspring stating that the screen was "better" than the IIIx? The reports I got said that the screen was the SAME screen as the IIIx.

Red face

The reviews I read compared the screen to the Palm V, and which is described as better than the Palm IIIx

DaBuzz -- my report came directly from Handspring on 1999.09.15.

After reading the posts here, I'm feeling a little more optimistic about the screen... For what it's worth, I really don't remember seeing ANY streaking (even at darkest contrast) on the V I used to have. It was just a great screen... too bad it didn't have a reliable cover...

But like I said before, we'll see. My card still hasn't been charged (at least not by HS). Maybe next week.

Cool

I haven't noticed any streaking at normal contrast. Maybe it's there, and I don't know what to look for. In which case, I don't want to look for it

Thumbs down

My Visor streaks at all contrast levels. The Palm V wasn't like this.

At medium contrast, some streaks are visible on my visor, but only if I tilt it to get the light just right and _try_ to see them. My screen looks great! No streaking _problem_ here. (I checked using the infamous week view in the datebook)
