SuperFast Hotsyncs !
You may have already have known this but with all the data on my Prism this sure helped me.
Faster HotSync
With this tip, you should be able to significantly increase your HotSync time. In certain cases your Palm handheld can HotSync in about 5-10 seconds! The factory default connection settings for Hotsync with the Palm is set for serial speeds of 57,600 bps. Palm Computing probably does this to ensure maximum compatibility out of the box. However, it means that you're not likely taking advantage of the speed of USB for hotsync operations!
Interested in speeding things up?1 From your launcher, tap on 'HotSync'
2 Tap on the menu button on the pad (lower left corner)
3 Select "Connection Setup..." from the menu
4 tap the "new" button
5 Enter a cool name for self gratification purposes
6 IMPORTANT: Select the connection method "USB/Serial to PC". All other options on the screen will go away, which is OK.
7 tap the "details" button
8 Select a new speed 230,400 bps or they highest one.
9 Tap 'ok', then 'ok' again, then 'done'
10 You should be back on the main hotsync screen. Under the big hotsync button in the middle of the screen, there's a drop down box, use it to select the connection that you just made.
11 Grab your Palm, place it in the cradle, and treat yourself to an ultra-fast HotSync!!

Re: SuperFast Hotsyncs !
Unbelievable! Almost doubled my hotsync speed!
Thanks!

Hey, great info! Thanks. I do have to point out that on the Visor Deluxe that menu option for the USB is not there. This must be a new feature of OS 3.5. I set it up on my Visor Platinum but was unable to do it on the wife's Deluxe. Thanks again.

Are there any potential problems with doing this?
Dataloss? Corruption? Himina-himinas?
I've been using a Prism since January and have been struggling with this issue since then. I sync with WinME/USB at home and Win95/serial at work. My "connection setup" is "Direct USB/Serial," the "connection method" is Serial to PC (since I just synced at work - I think it automatically switches to "USB to PC" when I sync at home, but I'm not sure - also note that I can't select the obvious choice, "USB/Serial to PC," unless I want to create a custom setting, because the "connection setup" line then automatically changes to "custom"), and the "connection speed" with that method is 57,600 with automatic flow control.
Does anybody know if these are the optimal settings in my case? HS Tech Support has been totally unable to answer this question - the tech reps only have VDxes, which as previously noted don't have the connection setup option. Any help is appreciated.
I too have a Prism and started playing with the HotSync settings as soon as I found it had more configurations than my old Deluxe.
My solution was to create a new Configuration completely.
I created one called USB to PC and under Details set it up to run at 230,400BPS. I also have the original Direct USB/Serial configuration.
There is an important element that has not been mentioned and some users with one serial/one USB cradle may find helpful:
If you go into System | HotSync you have the ability to change which configuration is used to sync the device via the dropdown list. On my Prism I have the USB to PC configuration selected. This works fine provided I hit the OnScreen HotSync button. If I use the Button on the cradle, it still uses the Direct USB/Serial connection. Using this method, you can achieve faster hotsyncs over USB without screwing up the Serial Cradle Hotsyncs. You just have to remember to turn the Prism on and go into HotSync and use the OnScreen button for the faster connection. I have yet to figure out a way to make my USB to PC connection the default so it will work from my Cradle Button.
I thought about deleting all other connections and see what happens, but have not done it. Anyway, I know this may not make much sense, so if anyone has questions about what I "really" mean, just post a reply and I will try to get back to you.

BE AFRAID - BE VERY AFRAID:
I tried this little trick and got 2 problems:
1. When synching with my on-line(company) Meeting Maker the connection speed was so fast that I lost every appointment since March 1st.
2. When synching with Docs to Go I received a fatal error which crashed both my Prism and my computer.
Luckily everything is now OK and I've recovered data - a little scare though.
You cannot delete the 3 connections the unit comes with. I use power button hack to turn on in hotsync then I press the on screen button. Anybody know a hack that will turn the unit on to a selectable app. by pressing the up key? My Slipper case obstructs the power button when its in the cradle.

Works Great on my PRISM. Thanks
I tried to do this on my sister's Deluxe, but apparently it can only be done on models with OS 3.5 or higher.

Whoa....
Very impressive.
My AvantGo sync speed tripled.
Thanks for the info!
Ok I did as it says.
But from what I can tell I have to press the on-screen hotsync button to use the new "Custom" setting, right?
If I press the cradle hotsync button, I get the standard. Is there a way to make the cradle hotsync button always use the requested "Custom" setting?

Handspring Tech Support has previously told me that you shouldn't have to do this. They say that the default connection - Direct USB/Serial, which is what you get when you press the cradle button - will automatically detect whether the handheld is in a serial cradle or a USB cradle, and sync at the maximum speed for that cradle. True or false? I've tested it their way and ours (creating the custom USB 240,000 bps connection), and I think HS may be right - but I'm really not sure. And if it doesn't work the way they say, then what is the purpose of the Direct USB/Serial default?

Well, I've done something testing and found that it is actually taking longer to use the "custom" method. For some reason, when using the "custom" method my Avantgo re-syncs every page. It will actually re-save all 234 pages on a "custom" sync. If I use the standard sync method it will update (normally) just the pages that need updating which is usually around 65-150 pages. I thought I was just seeing things so I did it multiple times just to make sure and every sync, using "custom", all 234 pages sync up.
The normal method only takes 35-60 Besides (for me) so I don't think I need it any faster. Besides, if I was using serial then maybe this could help but using USB is fast enough for me.
