Virtual File system.

It's a feature in OS 4.0, that sony devleoped for their clies. Palm stoel it (part of the lisence agreement) and used it for their SD cards.

It's a method of accessing the data on the card, and programs etc..

ok, i think i understand what it is now. an update of some sort that lets the memplug act like a flash memory modual.....be able to read information instantly and have it act as more internall memory.

Isn't VFS also suppouse to allow you to modify databases that are stored on SM or CF cards and then save them back to the module.

If it is not the case then I would like to see that in the MemPlug. I want more speed too.

VFS is just a standard interface for Palm Programming.
With VFS, you can run other VFS awared applications on MemPlug.

VFS will provide an programmer interface for program to read/write smartmedia card only. It is not the same as PiDirect, which allow you to seamlessly to run your applications.

If you are looking for higher speed, you can try our MemPlug CF module, which is 3-4 times faster than MemPlug-SM, but more power hunger as well.

PIT's VFS will be available very soon and it is free.
Please key an eye on this forum, our product forum and our webpage

so then will VFS let you run applications from the memplug like piderect but better. also Pideveloper could add a link to your website in your signiture, it would be easier to access it that way.

thanks,
robert

No, VFS does not launch apps from a memplug.

VFS is a standardized way by which programmers can add external memory capability to their programs without having to write their program for each external memory adapter that comes along. This way, one set of code is written that can work with many types of memory. Such as Kopsis' Flash Adapater, Memplug SM and CF, SD/MMC, and Memory Stick.

PiDirect, however, is a means by which you can effectively "run" programs stored on the memory in your memplug. It, I assume, was written for the Memplug line of springboards only. If it were to be written as an application that supports VFS, anybody with external storage could use it, regardless of the media type.

No. VFS is just an application programmer interface for programmer develope applications to run on MemPlug and other VFS support devices.

For the users, they can benefit from existing VFS applications that will read/write the external memory.

VFS support won't help you to directly execute or seamlessly access data on external memory without other 3rd party's applications.

PiDirect is an application that help seamlessly execute and access data on external memory. Even we have VFS support, you still need PiDirect for seamlessly access data for non-VFS awared applications.

So how soon can we expect to see VFS from PIT, PiDeveloper? Within the next three months?

The moment VFS is on the memplug, I'm gonna buy it : )

After that, it's the perfect memory adapter.

PIT posted on their yahoo discusion group, that they
were looking for beta testors for VFS support. I wonder
why they didnt post anything here about it?

"Subject: VFS beta testers wanted !!!

Dear MemPlug users,

Memplug CF and SM will soon support the Palm OS 4.0 Virtual File
System (VFS). Many 3rd party software now adopt VFS which will allow
direct access of databases stored on the memory card. MemPlug CF and
SM users will soon enjoy the benefit of VFS.

We would like to invite you to do some internal beta testing for our
new software. Please read the following if you like to try beta
software and you are interested to join our internal beta testing
program:

Requirements: To be a VFS beta tester, you would need
1. A Memplug CF or MemPlug SM
2. Any Visor devices
3. Not to disclose any related info to any 3rd parties without our
permission.
4. Summit a beta test report after test (The report should include
comments, bugs reports and a list of VFS applications that have been
tested)

For interested parties, please send your information as following to
us at [email protected]."

I responded to beta test, but they have already got their volunteers.
