Does anyone know if files can be sent from the Visor to Win2k via the IR port without new software on either device. When i place my visor near the ir port on my laptop, win2k sees the visor, and the visor says "waiting for sender." Does this, in essence, mean that files can be exchanged?

Unfortunately, no you cannot. Because Win2K does not support virtual Com: ports like Win98, it is not possible to make HotSync bind to the port. If you do a search on "Windows 2000" and "IR" across all forums, you will find a link that I posted to MS's site explaining this issue and their justification for not using virtual Com:'s

Wink

You may be able to hotsync through IR with Win 2K in a near future. But you still need to install IrLink on your visor.
I asked it and received a message as follows,

=============================================

IrLink for the Visor will work with Windows 2000. We have not decided if you will be required to purchase an IR driver ( Windows 2000 does not support IR at all!) or whether we will write it (sell it or include it).

But we have support Windows 2000

I think WSullivan means the build in IR-functionality of win 2k.

I tested this too, and sometimes I can beam stuff from my visor to my laptop (and vice versa) but lately it does not work anymore.

I was able to beam my bussiness card to my laptop and some apps to my visor.

However, I don't think it will support syncing.

You are correct. Although Syncing would be great, I would just like to get a few apps to the Visor while I wait for a USB solution. What did you do to get as far as beaming apps. I have a few config options in my bios for the ir port. Not sure which to use.

WSullivan,

I'm using a toshiba tecra 8000 laptop and did not change any bios settings...

What options do you have?

I am using a HP 4150. I can set the IR port for SIR, FIR, or ASK-IR. When it is set to SIR, win 2000 sees the Visor and gets my name from it. the Visor says "waiting for sender" When I try to beam from the Visor, i get a message saying that not other handheld devices are found. When I try to send from the laptop, I get a message that the link was terminated.

What version of windows are you using? I am using beta 3 with the hp beta bios. Not sure if any changes in the beta bios affected IR. I know that there were changes to USB.

Success!

Not sure what changed, but i am now capable of beaming apps from my laptop with windows 2000 to my visor. it doesn't work consistently, but it does work. I'm not sure if the inconsistency is with the visor or with windows, but I am happy to report that I can at least change the channels on my tv as i wait for a usb driver from handspring.
