Treo 180 Reviewed
James takes a lengthy look at the Treo 180. Is this the future of handheld computing?

...only 4/5 flips, though? I dunno.. if there were portions of flips, I would put it at 4.75 at least...
...then again, I can't seem to replicate your calc -> LIII error. I'm using 3.0.5... anybody else able to replicate this error?
Thanks for the review!

Nice phone....but
No springboard slot is a major disappointment.
No way to restore from backup if a hard reset is required and you are away from your PC. Same if the batteries go.
Even if the springboard slot was the same as the Edge sled. May not look pretty, but you would only use it when a Backup/Restore is needed.
One major requirement for any type of PDA that I would consider is a Backup/Restore feature; be it Backup module or flashcard.
Battery Life
I know battery life has already been talked about by others, but it wasn't mentioned in your review. What was your experience, James?

Backing up
What about those backup solutions that use the HotSync port? I thought I saw products like that for some Palm handhelds. Couldn't they just make a version of that that would fit the Treo's port? I can't imagine having *any* handheld on the road without a backup/restore solution.
Retail?
PS - any word on when we might see Treos in retail stores (eiter VoiceStream/Cingular stores or places like Best Buy)? I think there are still a few of us who don't like to drop $400 sight-unseen...
One question: when HS releases the GPRS patch (and the carriers support it), will that eliminate the need to dial-up your ISP to access the Internet? One of the things that annoyed me the most about the VisorPhone was that you couldn't just turn it on and grab some info quickly off the Web, because you had to go to the network panel in prefs and connect and wait for the dial-up, handshaking, etc. I think the blackberry and i705 are probably closer to 'always on' wireless when it comes to web browsing than the treo, aren't they?
Telephone Sound Quality Comments?
James, thanks for the review. I'd like more information concerning your opinion on the Treo's phone quality. I found the Visorphone to be unacceptable (IMHO) and was wondering how the Treo's compared. Was the Treo's sound quality only marginally better than the Visorphone or significantly better?
No Flash ROM
I do not believ e that the No Flash ROM thing you mentioned in your review is accurate.

quote:I don't have a VPhone anymore, but based on my recollection, the Treo is significantly better. When I used the VisorPhone, it was hard to hear the other person, and the Visor's mic made for a tiny voice. The Treo is comparable to other cell phones in terms of audio and mic quality; just be sure to hold the Treo properly like I mentioned in the review.

What about multilingual support?
Hi
couple of questions about multilingual support.
I had a Visor Platinum with Visor-phone.
I consider upgrading to the treo 180.
1. Is it possible to have the keyboard to include hebrew? How is it done?
2. can I use the same hebrew support that I used with the Visor-platinum?
3. How can I input hebrew text without the keyboard?
Thanks in advance
