-- Magellan maps on InnoPocket Flashadapter (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12707)

Posted by kgilbertsen on 03-08-2001 02:07 PM:

After installing the InnoPocket Flashadapter on the Visor, my installed Magellan maps show up as files like 'MagellanDB010010017000'. Many have the SAME file name. Is there any way to differentiate one from another? Why don't they show as 'Chicago', etc.?

This is one of my biggest gripes with the Magellan, I tried the Geoview software, and it installed fiels with names, so I could work out which map was which. Thus, I couldload maps not in use into CF, and then bring them out when I travel to an area.

The only way I have found to know which one is which with the Magellan is to look at file sizes. You have to compare from inside the program, to what the file mover says, and then you should know which was which.

This is easy for moving into CF, or other media, but knowing which map is which when moving back is not so easy. I haven't tried re-naming the maps, I figured that was not likely to work.

I agree that file size is really the only way to come close to figuring out which map is which, but with so many maps of similar size, this will be a real pain. I think I'll contact Magellan to see if they can adapt to this need in an update.... Thanks Russ.

The database name stored internally in a PalmOS database is not in any way tied to the filename given to the PRC/PDB file by developers when the software is distributed. Unfortunately, as soon as you HotSync a file to your Visor, the "nice" filename is lost completely. It may still exist in some proprietary place within the database, but FAFileMover has no knowledge of application specific data.

The best solution to this problem is to use a PC CF card reader to load PRC/PDB files directly onto the CF card from your PC. Then the "nice" filename will be retained and displayed by FAFileMover. Just watch out for names longer than 32 characters (not counting the extension) as they will be ignored.

Good call, thanks for that Dave. It is cool when developers pay attention to customers, especially when the questions asked are not even really about their own product. I would almost buy your software more than once just out of support . Notice I said almost... I am still a starving college student, and my PDA addiction doesn't help.

Thumbs up Dave, you're a Genius!

Dave,

Worked great! This has solved a major concern, and will assure the maximum use of your software and the InnoPocket.
Thanks again,

Ken
