Question folding logo

Wow, time flies by. I was finally able to play around with a folding @home logo and I wanted to know if you liked the concept before I tweaked it. So here is the very rough visor helix. I can make it into a tall logo with a few words (and a better looking double helix) if you like it, otherwise I'm open to ideas...

btw: those are supposed to be styli on the sides .

Don't worry, it wasn't a real Platinum .

How many people are on the Handspring Visor User Symposia team? The stats aren't looking too good. Is it just you Fishscaler?

I just down loaded the program and have started to crunch the info. I just joined that group.

No, I was thinking more along the lines of a stretched-out twisted Visor, where you'd see part of the front then the back then the front then the back then ...

It would have to be vertical, I suppose.

Sorry for not replying until now. My ISP (Ameritech) was offline since late Saturday. Had something to do with their software unable to process passwords.

Fishscaler, do you have POV-Ray ro 3dMax? Something to model in 3D? You might be able to get away with a simple color-coded double-helix with each rung texture-mapped with a visor? I'll get to work on it Friday and post results.

Got Terragen and Softcad 3d and Genesis 3d, but I'd have to reinstall them. Took them and other things off when I upgraded to winMe.

I changed the Genesis 3d link to that of the official site.

Angry

I've signed up too...

Bad thing is - I noticed in doing so that I had a typo in my email address when I registered with SETI@home, so I can't retrieve the password for that account. I was forced to create a new one. Several months of credits down the drain... Oh Fudge.

I'm running this from my work machine, so I have it crunching data whenever I'm not using the machine, 24/7. It's a Dell Gn+ 233 with 64 mgs RAM (embarrassing piece of equipment, since *I'm* one of the tech support people). I tried running it in the background instead of just as a screensaver, but the system slowed down too much.

Wasn't that what I did (albeit a rough draft)? Except for the cutting up of the Visor

I use Amapi (www.tgs.com) to model, it's a great program.

Recently I migrated from Strata to Cinema4d (www.maxon.net) for the texturing, lighting and animating.

Go ahead and see what you can do though, I probably won't have the time to do anything until the weekend.

Edit: I'm getting the strangest results trying to make my links work. Seems like the page code is all messed up so I just removed the url statements...

Thatch, what is that in your signature?

Exclamation Folding at Home

I changed the name of the group for Folding@Home to HVUS. So...

When you install the program (console only; modem activity stops the screensaver version -- and I'm assuming PC here), type your name in the slot, then a space, then in parentheses HVUS, then hit return. So...

Examples:

Fishscaler (HVUS)
yourNameHere (HVUS)

Gotta keep your name relatively short, as the name slot doesn't scroll.

And Folding@Home works simultaneously with the screensaver version of SETI@Home. (Only that you'll process everything much slower and you'll NEVER catch Cerulean.)

It's a PADD, from Star Trek: Voyager. I took a screen grab from one of the episodes (don't rember which one) and a Handspring logo, then used Photoshop to contort the logo so it looks okay. I'm going to add the text "Handspring Padd: Release in 2370. Extimated street price: We're beyond money." or something similar soon

Got any ideas on the DNA angle? I need inspiration (it looks horrible right now). Which primitives to use, colors, light direction...any would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with the tools you have handy, but here is what I started to do. Make a tall skinny object (rectangle or cylinder) and twist it for the sides. Then duplicate it and put some more rectangles in between both of them. Or you could make the whole thing first and then twist it, but then the "protein" rectangles would also get distorted.

When putting the Visor textures on the "protein" rectangles you might want to put two per rectangle. Otherwise you would have to have thick rectangles or distorted Visors.

At first I was thinking that the view should be direct from the front without any angle, so that it fits in the tall rectangular logo. But that would be somewhat boring, so as long as it is can fit in that form that Fishscaler wanted, make it whatever angle makes it look the best. You could even tilt it and focus on the top or bottom, that might look good.

I'm sure none of that was of much help, but I figured I'd throw in my two cents .

I've got a prototype:

Comments welcome (especially camera angles). I'm still trying to get the texturemap so it looks right. If anyone wants the whole thing kinda twisted-curvy, I can try.

Till Later,

YES!! YES!! YES!!

Thatch! You've got it!

Now map a Visor to it.

OR

Use that DNA as a screen on a closeup image of a Visor. I'm thinkin' the pic at http://www.handspring.com/company/p...t/bluevisor.jpg , though this one http://www.handspring.com/company/p...Prism_Angle.jpg would be neater (& thinner).

You'd have the miniaturize that pic & remove the white background, of course.

Just thought I would throw in that the stats page doesn't seem to be updating again. I've got 8 units completed that aren't showing....no biggie....just an FYI.
