I work here at Handspring as our System Administrator. First, I'll say please don't bombard me with messages asking for all kinds of poprietary info, cuz I can't answer them or I'd have to shoot you. But, as a fellow Palm nut, I've simply got to say, the Visor Handheld Rocks! I've been stuck on my Palm V for a while, but hating the memory situation. I've had to delete a lot of apps to keep the thing useable as I have needed new functionality. The EFIG upgrade is just way too expensive and a bit dangerous too. Anyway, I've ditched my Palm V for a Visor because the memory is huge. I could even throw in another 8 MB card, and that would take me quite a while to fill up. Also, the USB is so great. You've never synced until you've done it over USB. It absolutely rips and it makes having lots of memeory a pleasure. Anyway, when you consider the price, memory, USB, fun color case, Springboard slot, built in Datebook 3, etc. it is damn hard to resist. If you are on the edge, take it from someone who has owned every Palm since the 5000, this is the way to go.

Also, since you're ditching your Palm V anyway, I'd be glad to take it off your hands.....

Actually, I am very objective. I thought for quite a while about keeping my Palm V because I like the metal case, but all of the other factors are more important to me. I think other Palm nuts will agree, as we tend to push these devices much more than the average Joe who just wants the four basic apps. But, even that average Joe will love the price!

With the just-announced 8Mb Palm V, there is now one less advantage Visor has over the PalmPilot

Personally, I'm very anxious to get a small device with a wireless connection to the Internet. The Palm VII seems perfect for that, but its $700 price tag is far too steep. I hope Handspring will be able release something similar for a lower price, or as I mention in another topic, I hope there will be a springboard module to add such a capability to the Visor.

But at $200 more it doesn't take anything away in my opinion. Because for that price you could have the Visor Deluxe with 16MB of memory and 8MB of backup memory by getting the 8MB Flash Module and 8MB Backup Module. Plus you still have $80 left over. Beat that Palm Vx. Plus, where will you go from there? Palm Vx - no springboard

As you're are a former PalmV user what's your perspective on the lack of flash rom O/S upgradablity. This is my only concern about the Visor verses the Palm 3x.

Palm V and Visor are different products which do the same thing, more or less.

Most cars do the same thing, and are still slightly different. There is no best car for all puposes.

The Palm V is trendy and very small. The Visor is much larger. If size is your concern then Palm V is the way to go.

You are comparing a Ferarri to an off-road vehicle.

Definitly the Visor will not take ANY market share from the Palm V.

So... how's the screen compare? On the Palm website, it shows that the Palm V and the Palm IIIx share the "advanced screen technology"... but in person, the V rocks the IIIx in terms of screens.

I heard that the Visor used the same screen as the V, but I'm not sure. Is it the SAME screen? Or is it just like the IIIx?

Yes, the Visor uses the same LCD as the PALM-V.

Right on HipHop. That seems exactly what the situation is right now. I've been seeing a lot of biased opinions here probably from those who have pre-ordered their Visors and it's nice to see an objective view on the Visor and Palm V situation.

What Jeff didn't mention was the price break he--as an employee of HS--inevitably got on the Visor. Man, if I could get a Visor for $100 (just a guess here), there's no question what I'd be carrying too.

My friend, I would prefer to call myself a Realist. But I'll accept the compliment since it means that I don't buy into the heady, emotional, "gotta have it now" syndrome that drives many consumers.

In my view, cool minds make cool decisions which are rarely regretted later. As a result most marketing folks hate me, because I always want to kick the tires and explore the tough questions first.

It would probably surprise you to know how much of an evangelist I am for the Palm/Visor design approach. I may not be a true early adopter, but I widely support what Handspring is attempting.

And I'll stick to my comment also, though I'll inevitably purchase a Handspring device in the next 6 months, I'd buy it much sooner if the price was under $100.

Handspring. Visor. Gimme.
