-- Intermittent USB host sync Win98 (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2194)
I see a lot of posts about USB host-sync issues but none exactly like mine.
I have a Visor Deluxe and I sync to both and NT machine using a serial cradle and Win98 using a USB cradle. I have never had a problem syncing with the serial cradle.
However, every 4th or 5th time I sync with the Win98 machine nothing happens -- the Visor says it is trying to start the sync but nothing on the PC side. I have found that soft reseting the Visor fixes the problem every time. Anyone else seeing this?
My Win98 machine's motherboard is an Asus P2B-L w/builtin USB ports.
Thanks!
I have a related but somewhat different problem. Basically I have to do a soft reset *every time* I want to hotsync with the USB cradle. Otherwise, the connection is never made.
I have a similar setup (Win 98 w/ USB at home and NT4.0 and serial at work). I find that I have to do a soft reset every now and again while syncing up at home (probably about 1 in 15 times). I have an Intel board at home with built in USB port. No problems syncing up at work.

I have problems with USB sync as well. At work (under NT), I have a serial cradle, and it works quite reliably. However at home where I have USB with Win98, I have to soft-reset about 30% of the time to make sync work -- in some cases two attempts in a row will result in the first one working, but not the second one.
This problem (need to soft reset to make USB sync work) appears to be quite widespread.
I have the exact same problem with my Ice Visor Deluxe.
At home, I have a pentium III processor with USB port running with Windows 98 (Second Edition), and I frequently have to do a soft reset to successfully hotsync using the USB cradle in order for the handheld to connect with the PC. It is not a major problem, since I just have to unscrew the tip of my stylus and press the reset button, but it is a little annoying.
At work, I have Windows 98 with no USB port, and therefore use a serial cradle. I have never had to soft reset to hotsync at work.
Are there any ideas what causes this, and how to permenantly fix the problem?
Well, I had this problem myself and thus I decided to call for Support. However, I had to wait for 30 mins before being able to talk to anyone. Anyways, the workaround to USB problem is this:
1. Soft reset your Visor.
2. Open REGEDIT in Windows 98. (Be careful if you are new to Windows registries. Be sure to make backups)
3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\USB\
4. Delete the entry: VID_082D&PID_0100.
5. Close REGEDIT.
6. Make sure Local USB is checked in your Hotsync Manager.
7. Perform Hotsync.
Hope this helps. It sure worked for me.
