-- Battery and dot 7 problems with VDX (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15060)
My wifes Visor Deluxe is using batteries at an alarming rate. A set every three days. You can watch the battery meter go down when it is switched on.
I checked the dot seven setting to see what type of battery it was set to but instead of getting the normal [ni cad] [Alkaline] etc. options all it says is [other] This can not be changed by repeating the command.
I have disabled and removed all hacks and tried reseting. After a hard reset I do get the options but as soon as I back up from the backup module I get the same [other] response.
I have tried deleting each program one at a time to see if there is a software conflict but this does not cure the problem.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you.
Was the backup module originally formatted on a Platinum or Prism? This is exactly what happens when you use a backup module formatted with a different OS than the handheld. This happened to me last weekend when my husband and I tried to switch Visors.
Did you install any kind of battery monitor program or hack? Since you say the problem re-appears after a restore, there's obviously some app causing the problem.
Also, try a warm reset (hold the UP button while resetting) and see if the normal battery settings are there. If not, then it's most likely due to a hack.
One last thing... I might be tempted to try another hard reset and not install or restore anything else. Use the device for a bit and see how the battery life is. If it stops the noticable draining, then you can rule out a hardware problem.

God bless America, my home sweet home...
I have taken off every program one at a time and reset between! But it never seems to sort the problem However there is some good news, I installed Battery Panel and this lets me select Alkaline. Now when I try the Shortcut/dot/7 command I get the battery options instead of [other] which is all I got before!
I will keep you informed.
Thanks for the help.
Martin
Just yesterday the same thing happened to me. One of my programs caused my Visor to crash everytime I tried to access data in it. I found out the conflict was in the saved_preferences file, one of the system files. The software tech support people sent me a new saved_prefs file which I loaded, and it caused that one program to work, but it jacked up the whole Visor, and I ended up having to do a hard reset and reinstalling all my programs.
You should be alright as long as you don't restore the saved_prefs file. You may just have to reinstall/restore everything from your backup folder rather than from the module. If you do, I would suggest deleting the saved_prefs file from your backup folder before restoring. It worked for me. Also, if your saved_prefs file is messed up, you may start to notice other wierd things happening too.

Visor Deluxe devours batteries
I have used my Visor Deluxe for one year. Very pleased with it.
BUT, in the last six weeks it has developed a huge appetite for batteries. Average life now is 4-5 days.
I have...
- removed all third party software
- tried new, fresh Duracell alk. batteries (that's what I always use)
- removed Tiger Woods springboard mod
- followed the 12 step program from Handspring tech support (disable beam receive, auto-off one minute, etc)
No relief.
Before this problem developed I was getting about 21 days on a set of batteries. My usage has not changed.
Any suggestions?
Anyone else have this problem with Visor?
What kind of battery life to you typically experience?
Thanks in advance.
I finally cured the problem by leaving the batteries out of my wife's Visor for 24 hours. My reasoning was that when I did a hard reset the Visor still retained the time, so I figured that it may still be remembering what was causing the problem!
Anyway it worked for me. Let me know how it goes.
Cheers
Martin

Kudos to Handspring Tech Support
My battery consumption problem (see above) did not respond to suggestions from Handspring or others. HS tech support responded by replacing my in-warranty Visor Deluxe. This is great customer service. (To bad it was needed, but great service). I was getting ready to be mad at these guys but I remain very pleased with HS and the Visor.
I must be doing something wrong. I'm trying to see my battery settings, and I'm getting nothing...
It's a shortcut, then a dot, then the number 7, all done in a new blank memo, right?
TIA

Thanks. That works. This could be the source of my problem. My setting was for NiCads, but I'm using standard Duracells. Do I simply enter the word alkaline?
Helen
Keep doing
..7 until it reads alkaline. You can then delete the memo.

My Treo has more memory than I do.
One last question... sorry to bother you all. Usually I'm not so inept.
I've done all that's been suggested, and it's worked so far. Thanks. However, if I do the trick again (after setting it to [alkaline] and deleting the memo, should it come up the next time with [NiCad]? Or is my VDX not saving the setting for some reason?
Helen
If I remeber correctly, that is the correct way for it to work. It always brings up the next battery type in the list.
