My French teacher was also the highschool Spanish teacher and mostly taught Spanish.. and was a native of Spain.. So what does that tell you about my dialect of French?

Although my mother is a native French speaker we had trouble for many years just understanding each other when we spoke French.. Her's was more Canadian-slangish in origin and from her perspective my French is more of a Spanish-Parisian mix.

I was once out with my boss and his wife (native Parisians both) and we were sitting near a couple speaking French in a decidedly Qu�becois accent. My boss' wife turned to me later and asked "what language were they speaking!"

High school. They can write in blood if they want - as long as they write large enough for my old eyes to read it. hehe! Come to think of it...with some of our students, that's a strong possibility. <sigh>

Meanwhile, I'm starting to see some regional influence on the number of posts. Is there anyone in the top 10 from the midwest or central states? Which is why you must never try the one word at a time trick of translating by dictionary. My alltime favorite example of that is:

Je mademoiselle ma mere.

Any guesses as to what that means when taken *literally*?

You got it. But that isn't exactly what it *means*, is it. If it were as simple as looking up words in a dictionary, any 4th grader could translate.

Agreed, but if you don't know 1 verb in the sentense and know the rest it is the only way...

You're dealing with a teacher here and you want me to cut you some slack?

Seriously, the problems I encounter stem from the fact that the children's grasp of their native language is so poor to start with that they don't know a noun from a verb in the first place. And thanks to ebonics and the removal of final consonants, they are hopelessly lost in matters of tense.

I think it would be interesting to compare the amount of posts per user when they first joined to the amount they post after a week, a month, etc.

of course, the longetivity around here is typically based on the camraderie, more that the visor anymore....
