I'm trying to decide whether or not to get the Visor or the V. Deluxe. My intended use is a personal planner(nothing work related) and as a cool toy. I imagine I would like to have a # of games on there, a couple of books, and whatever other funky software. If this is my usage, can I get by with less ram? i.e. Don't get the Deluxe?

The other wrinkle is that I imagine within a year I will want to get a color palm with all the bells and whistles, whether from Sony, Handspring, or Palm.

So with that in mind can I easily get by with the less ram or will I easily max that out?

Right now, I have a 16MB Visor (VDx + 8meg springboard expansion). I'm using over 10 megs of the combined total. Of course, I have several (too many) books, the Bible, several AvantGo channels, a bunch of random stuff in iSilo, more games than I need (or ever play, for that matter), etc., etc.

But you didn't want to hear about me. I think nearly everyone is going to agree that you can get buy with the 2MB version, but you won't want to. Not after you discover all the cool stuff you can hold in the palm of your hand. (Like more stuff than I'll read before my Visor is obsolete!)

You be the judge. I'm afraid I probably haven't helped much.

If it is for a daily planner then 2mb is more than enough.Just remeber that palm pilots with a quarter of that memory fulfiled that function quite well.
If you are using it for a toy or to use the many apps that are now available for the palm OS books,avantgo etc then get the deluxe. Some springboards may need the extra memory, e.g. the eyemodule.
Anyway a deluxe is still cheaper than an 8meg unit from palm.(for now anyway, when color comes out that may change, we shall see)

I would say that if you are reading VisorCentral than you need the 8MB. You will hear about great software and fill up that 2MB quick.

Like bpowell, I am using an 8MB Visor plus some of the 8MB in the Flash Springboard, and I agree with James that 2MB would probably be too little.

If you think you going to use the Visor for more than "Franklin Planner" capabilities, 8MB should be purchased. It's really easy to get over your apps to total more than 4MB (or even over 8MB).

As long as the plan is to get a color handheld in the near future, why not save some money now and get the Visor ($179) or the Visor Solo ($149)? If you need more memory before the upgrade to color, get the 8MB Springboard....

The Visor Solo is useless for most people, unless they get it as a second Visor. It doesn't come with a cradle - you can't load software and you can't backup (unless you buy the $40 backup module). (In that situation, even 250 Kb would probably be OK.) So, in truth the only options are the $180 Visor vs. the $250 Visor Deluxe.

Since you want to use it for non-business purposes, clearly you should get the deluxe. No question. End of story. If you only wanted to use it for scheduling, you would not need it. Also, don't think you can skimp on the unit and make up for it with the 8 meg flash module. Many apps (those that require read/write capabilities) will not work from this module. I have the 8 meg flash module and it is great. But is not as good as the 8 meg on the handheld.

There are so many cool things out there, 8 megs is clearly the way to go for entertainment purposes. It is also, by far, the best value, given the market price for 8 megs on the handheld. (i.e. the price of a Palm with 8.) The standard visor with 2 megs does not have the same price advantage over the comparable Palm.

I truly believe you will kick yourself if you don't get the deluxe. Yes, I know there are people that will be equally happy with 2 megs and the extra cash in their hand. But for the vast majority, 8 megs is the answer. And since this is a prediction of what someone who I don't know will want, I have to recomend what the greater percentage of people will want (in my opinion).

I also suspect that if you want to sell the unit later, you may make up some of the exta cash on the back end. (Does NADA publish market prices for used PDAs? )
