-- Thinmodem+ review ??? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12457)
I can't find a good review of the Thinmodem+ yet. I really want to get one but I want someone else's opionion whose actually used the thing first.
Also, any news on if/when the Thinmodem+ will be available at retail stores. I know I can get it straight from their web site but I'd rather see this thing in my hand before I buy. (Let's call that 'old-school' so as to not destroy my fragile ego)
Thanks

My opinion
I think that a review is supposed to be posted here on VisorCentral eventually.
I received my Thinmodem+ on Wednesday and have been playing with it since then. Here are the things that I have noticed:
1) It is definitely much faster than the regular Thinmodem that I briefly had. My connections have been 52 to 53Kb versus 33Kb with the regular Thinmodem.
2) V.90 is not, by default, enabled - It states that this is done because V.90 takes longer to connect and that for short connection times (ie just downloading e-mail) it saves time and batteries to not have this enabled. I personally did not notice a difference in connection times with it enable or not so I have left it enabled.
3) Battery drain appears the same as the regular Thinmodem - I put a fresh set in before using it and am now down to 83% after about 2 hours on-line. I have also done a number of hotsyncs (because of #4 below) and a backup with my backup module (before I started playing, just in case) in that time (of course, I also have been reading an e-book and playing games as well!). The battery consumption is no different than what I usual see with my Visor Platinum.
4) If you hot sync with the module in, you get the following error message in your hotsync log: "system synchronization failed". This does not happen if you remove the module and then hotsync. I contacted CardAccess and they said they are working on it.
5) Browse-It, File-mover, and the USBtransfer programs work great! No problems! No resets!
6) One-Touch e-mail looked nice and was easy to set up but it does something weird with the return address on the e-mails that I send (it sort of scrambles them) so people cannot see who the message is from or reply. I e-mailed JP systems who have said it is the way I have the POP and SMTP servers configured. Unfortunately, I must configure them that way to check my work e-mail account. Interestingly, I do not have this problem with the demo version of MultiMail that I downloaded. Unless JP Systems can provide a fix, I'll be switching to MultiMail.
To date, I have had no real problems and been happy with the purchase.
My one hesitation about the Thinmodem (+) modem line is the reported battery consumption. 17% in 2 hours (plus other non-modem activitiy) does not seem unreasonable. Is this what others are experiencing?
I think that the original thinmodem is inpractial because it sucked battrys and since few people walk around all day with a modem in their visor, the thin moded dosen't provide enough of an advatnage over the handsping modem

I think you'll see that A LOT of modules warrant the purchase of rechargeable batteries.
I like my ThinModem+ though I was dissapointed with a few things, overall I think its the best modem out currently.

Sync problems with Springboards
I don't think the problem with syncing while a Springboard is inserted is isolated to the Thinmodem. I have had this problem with several other Springboards when they are inserted. As stated before, I think it is related to trying to back up the software on the Springboard (even the preinstalled software). If I remember correctly, Handspring even recommends synching with Springboards removed.
On a side note, I have been very happy with my original Thincomm, and have had no complaints about battery usage. I'm actually looking at moving up to the Thincomm+ for the extra memory.

If at first you do succeed, try not to look astonished.
Backup Buddy knows about and can handle data on springboards.
I was trying to figure out why I wasn't having any of the wierd errors reported in this thread. Backup Buddy was the fix.
The Handspring backup module (for on-the-go backup and recovery of the whole device) and Backup Buddy (backs up everything at synch, gives file-level access to backed up apps and data)combine to give a robust backup solution.
Worth every penny, if you value your data.

ThinModem+
I am no expert when it comes to wired or wireless connection. I am a YadaYada subscriber and looking into purchasing the TM+. Please advise me of what else must I have to have a smooth installtion and get connected using the TM+. I do have an ISP as well (qwest.net). Thank you for your input in advance.
Get it!!!
I have had the TM+ for two weeks - I love it. My life is now complete. I never take it out, I can get my MS Outlook mail - sync Avant Go - and use the HS bifold case with it in. It works great with the GoType keyboard too. Battery life is OK - but I use it a bunch and usually replace the batteries every two weeks anyhow. Never had a problem stability wise - but configuration was hard - I am so used to Windows filling in all of the blanks for me that I was rusty on modem and mail server settings. The included mail software is fine for day to day use, but I cannot get BrowseIt to work. It may be my companies proxy server, but I am looking into it. Hope this helps snyone on the fence.
Email me with any questions @ [email protected]
I did just order the EB flip case - that should make it a slick setup!!
