Question

Would someone that has this module tell me what they think of it? I am specifically interested in the quality of the color images when printed out. The price is so much cheaper than standalone digital cameras. I would only be using it for occassional snap shots that I would either print out to keep, or email to family.

Pick Me! Pick Me! Heh heh

The eyemodule is a great novelty. Its an ideal outdoor camera. The tips at eyemodule.com work well. It performs well in good lighting. The drawback to the eyemodule is that there is no zoom feature to capture objects from a distance. If you're about 15 or so feet away, the eyemodule is . If you want head shots and body shots of a group of about 3 or 4 people then you're OK
I'll add that indoor shots aren't that great, and most of the time you'll have to do some image editing to come out with decent photos.

Try it out though. It all depends on what you think of it, and if it suits your needs. I got mine as a gift. I'm keeping it, because I like taking pictures, and I like the fact that I can sync and produce right away. I know that this is the same as other digital cameras, but I've never had one. I remember how cool it was when I first saw the Polaroid Instant Cameras and those big white frames on the developed photo. *sigh*

But enough nostalgia! Go out there Sunnie and get that Eyemodule! If you dont like it.. send it back.
I'll see if I can show some pictures. I took a cool op of a scavenger Squirrel chowing down on Burger King french fries, but when I synced over to my PC it didn't come out too well at all. I didn't wanna get to close to that squirrel.. He/she was all hopped up on fast food and guarding it with a passion. I was hoping to use that shot in my sig here, but it's not gonna happen.

Oh before I go, I'll mention that the eyemodule is the vampire to your Visor's blood. Yes. It is a battery hog. It's operation is intermittent once you're hovering less than or equal to 20% battery voltage. If you want to take a bunch of colour pics, be sure to remove them after you hotsync. They take up space quickly. Bonne chance!

I believe maximum resolution of the Eymodul is 320 x 320...correct? If you were to print a photo a photo-quality resolution, the image would be a little over 1" by 1". Any bigger than that, it'd look incredibly pixelated.

Just for comparison, even the cheapest of the digital cameras (sub-$100) shoot at a resolution of at least 640 x 480.

I think the Eyemodule is a cool 'novelty' module. If you want to take the occasional outdoor picture and don't expect too much picture quality this is your module...

If you want to do anything more serious I would go for a standalone camera...

I had the same dilemma and decided to wait a while (I bought a firewire card so I can use my DV camera in the mean time) hopefully there will be a improved version soon. Else I'll save up for a high-end digital camera with a good printer so I can take low-res pics for the web AND take Hi-res pics and will be able to print them (my wife loves hard copies...)

I've got a bunch of eyemodule pics at my website:
http://members.home.com/french-fry/index.htm

I think it is one of the greatest gadgets around. But it is no nikon. It something like the polaroid of digital cameras. All the same, its fun to take pictures of friends and e-mail the pictures to them later

Smile Thanks for the feedback

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. The samples of pictures were especially helpful Alex! I haven't decided what I want to do yet, but at least I know what I will be getting if I decide to go with it. I may just save up for a digital camera and pay the extra expense for the photo cartridge for my printer. Only problem is I WANT IT NOW! I am disappointed that this eyemodule isn't what I need it to be. (clearer pics)

The Eyemodule did not live up to my expectations but I decided to keep it anyway. I am hoping that once I have the Prism (and the Eyemodule patch) that it will be a little more palatable.

Cool Handy tip

And those Eyemodule users who posess Adobe Photoshop should know this:

Eyemodule pictures taken in dim light tend to have speckles all over them.
The Adobe Photoshop filters "Despeckle" and "Streaks & Dust" are amazingly good at removing said speckles.

Are you saying that an "Eye Patch" will improve the quality?

I was getting by with squinting

(I know...poor attempt at humor)

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but there are a few photo album type products for the Palm OS.

AlbumToGo, PocketPhoto,
and Handspring Photo Album.

(still wiping trout off my face )

EyeModule = Security Device

Sunnie,
I'm presuming you're female, and familiar w/all the attendant hassles & creeps the world can serve up. If I were female (but, hell, this can even help all males), I'd want an EyeModule "just in case" I encountered a creep at the bus stop, on the corner, etc. - to snap a quick photo (w/auto. date & time on it -- so the "perp" can't deny he was there, which is of course the 1st thing he'll do).

Yeah, the quality's not perfect, but even a crappy snappy is worth 1,000 words. It beats "trying to remember / describe" the "perp" to a Police Sketch Artist.

This is the REAL VALUE of EyeModule, which everyone (esp. pro reviewers) seems to have missed.
It's not about "toy-like-snapshots that you can beam & e-mail."

ALSO:
As I've mentioned elsewhere, though, ex-Borland CEO Kahn recently founded LightSky (or LightWave, or something), which intends to put one of those NEW, HIGH-RES., LOW-POWER PHOTO CHIPS into every phone on the planet as early as Jan. 1st.
You may want to wait until then to purchase your Personal Photo Security Device.

Good point bkbk

That is something to think about, bkbk. I think I may go ahead and get it for several reasons, and then still save up and get a good digital camera for higher quality photos for hard copies.

Posted by bkbk on 10-21-2000 09:05 AM:

Yeah, what the hey.
Some people decried the $150 -- but to me this was cheap. It could save my life! Or at least put a crook (or crooked cop, etc. - they're big on the "I was never there" excuse, too, or maybe "I'm sure you're mistaken - all uniforms must look the same to you," etc.) behind bars.
Or (in the very worst-case scenario, of course) kind of "point the finger from beyond the grave" the way Nicole's safe-deposit-box photos did at O.J.
It's sad, of course, we have to live in a world where we have to protect ourselves (and even our rights, against gov't. "authority figures" - or even store "Security Guards") -- but until Ubiquitous Video (can't WAIT for an audio/VIDEO module!) does this for us (as is done in Britain and Monaco right now), we have to take up the slack and do it for ourselves.
And EyeModule is unbelievably surreptitious. You can almost stick it right on someone's nose, and if they don't know what it is, they don't think twice about it.
And in near-perfect conditions, the photos are fine.
And you quickly learn what "near-perfect conditions" are to get good photos out of the EyeModule - so it kind of teaches you a bit about photography to boot.

Talking

What does a 'creep' look like? I'd rather not have someone take my picture because they don't like the way that I look, or are uncomfortable with another culture.

If you're talking about getting a shot of an assailant, good luck. If I have some spare time today I'll try some Quickdraw Mcgraw shots and demonstrate action/motion shots on the Eyemodule. If you have an eyemodule you'll know just how quickly you'll be able to insert into the springboard, wait for the software to boot(welcome Platinum! ), and then get the eyemodule to shoot and save the shot. Listen to the posts and experience. The eyemodule is useless at night (darkness.) In dim room lighting, or even during the day in a small sunlit room.. no go! It doesn't cut the mustard.

I can't live in fear in broad daylight because I'm comfortable with my suroundings. What may keep a 'creep' away is concealing that fancy Visor of yours. A prime reason I'll stick with PDAs and why I may never carry a laptop (around ugliest or prettiest of people.)
Stick with good old fashion mace if you find someone with their hands around your neck.

By the way.. OJ didn't do it, and the Mets didn't hit a homerun last night.

mr. kia

I'll also echo a sentiment that a Video Recorder would be a definite killer module. It would kick 'behind'.. uhh.. can I say 'behind' here? I'll do it again.. 'behind'. So I guess so

The eyemodule seems like an interesting invention. However, I agree that it is more of a novelty item only (although there's nothing wrong with that).

If your thinking about a backup camera in your purse/briefcase for emergencies, a cheapo 15 buck disposable camera with on-camera flash would be much more useful, however. I do note that aspect about it being not that noticeable though.

If you actually want to take party shots and a camera that can double as a web cam, there are a couple of USB 640x480 cameras for around the same price or cheaper.

If you want a "real" digital camera, then obviously none of these are solutions, and you buy something like my fave new toy, my digital camera which takes shots at 2160x1440. Err... I mean, second fave toy.

Evidentary Procedure

I can see from some of the feedback that I was remiss in failing to "include instructions" for gathering evidence: THE KEY IS TO PHOTOGRAPH PEOPLE UPON YOUR FIRST INKLING OF SUSPICION.

It is at this time you are most likely to secure a photo w/the least movement. In addition, the subject will not (yet, hopefully) have yet raised their suspicion / be looking for a camera / be agitated (and in motion / on the run) or "called security" "on you" (though they themselves may have done something wrong).

I keep the E.M. in my Visor at all times, mostly for this reason, but also because I own no other modules at the moment. Hence, there is no "suspicious movement" I must resort to (fishing out the E.M., loading it, waiting for the software to boot, etc.) to alert the subject.

[As a side note, I've actually written up quite extensive notes on this subject (what a surprise by now, huh?), though a lot of it applies to video. If I find the notes (pages and pages), and it seems appropriate to drop it in somewhere, I may. But I may just lay it out on its own separate Web page.]

For some reason, it seems that mrknowitall believes "creeps" can be id'd by "how they look." In our society, and in our court system (save when it comes to "indicting themselves" - "watching the watchers," as it were, which is why it's so important to have external, incontrovertible, actual evidence - like photos, audio and video; not "someone's word" or "sworn testimony" [which is often mistaken or hideously tained w/prejudice] or "a field report," etc.) WE JUDGE PEOPLE BY THEIR ACTIONS.

If "nothing occurs" - and "your suspicions are not confirmed" (and this can serve to TEACH YOU TO VERIFY FOR YOURSELF JUST HOW ACCURATE YOUR SUSPCIONS ARE OR ARE NOT - yet ANOTHER benefit to EyeModule) - no harm done, and you can just delete the photo (and save 187k, in the case of the color ones, WHICH ARE THE ONLY ONES I RECOMMEND, as neither B&W options your given on the E.M. are worth much), and don't have to worry about getting it to the cops or e-mailing the FBI or whatever.
(A FLASH PHOTO, of course, "might alert" the "perp." Just be nonchalant, I find, is best.)

But if the creep, cop, politican, lawyer, judge, con man, corrput official or civil servant, etc. BEHAVES IMPROPERLY, at least there will be some record, as opposed to none. But, as the Ancient Chinese saying goes:

"EVEN THE PALEST INK IS BETTER THAN THE BEST MEMORY."

So, please don't continue to decry the "quality" of the E.M. as if none of us own one (I do, else I'd not have responded to Sunnie's original query).
Of COURSE video, sound, better quality, etc. are more desirable - but don't let the O.J.s of the world get away w/murder TODAY because we're "waiting for better tech." TOMORROW.

Finally, of COURSE O.J. did it - very few other human beings in the history of this earth could have committed what was essentially a superhuman crime, given the time-line (and PLENTY of other evidence)

Oh, and if you read the "Mars & Venus" books (do NOT see the T.V. show, which obviously bears no resemblance), you'll learn to have REAL empathy for what a dangerous and degenerate world we force women and children to face by allowing the corrupt "officials" listed above get away w/their perpetual dereliction of duty in not protecting them adequately.

But, as I say, I believe Ubiquitous Video (simulcast on the Internet, for any and all of us to record / have a permanent record of - so we don't have to "trust" those corrupt persons in Wash.D.C. to do it for us) will go a long way toward generally solving the problems of crime & punishment ... and "creepism" and punishment, too.

Question eyemodule for Visor Platinum

Hi. Does anybody know anything about the eyemodule software update for the Platinum and Prism? The site says it would be available as of November 1 but I couldn't find anything.

Miguel

Posted by george_vc on 11-01-2000 10:59 PM:

I can't find the "eyepatch" either. But the web site does say "after" Nov 1st. One thing I am disappointed about te eyemodule is that you cannot "e-mail" a photo directly fromt he visor with a modem. You have to trasfer to the PC. But it is cool. One time it saved my bacon by taking picture of all of the dents in a rental truck before I rented it.
