I just had to do what I've read about... call Handspring because my Visor isn't working right.

The new one arrived a day after I called them (What great service!!) and I notice that the new (?) Visor's screen seems to have a plastic cover on it. Not one you can remove or anything, but when you press the screen, there is cover that you touch and then it touches the screen of the Visor.

My old Visor (bought in late Jan) doesn't have this. You touch the screen and you're touching the screen with nothing in between.

Does anyone have any info on this? Do the newer Visor's have this "cover"?

Hmmm.. what I want to know is does this new covering screen scratch more or less easily than the normal screens? Let us know.

I purchased a Visor in early January and it had the plastic covers, you could see it if you held it at an angle. This is so if the screen breaks all the pieces don't go everywhere. I believe most Palms also have these.

It's not a plastic cover, it's the touch-sensitive screen. The touch-screen is two sheets of resistive plastic stretched over a frame and separated by a small gap. It's possible that the earlier model had a smaller gap, or the gap was filled with a gel.

I learn something new everyday Always did wonder how the touch screen worked...

Well, I personally think that Handsprings Customer service blows. Bought my VDX in Feb and the screen cracked last week, called them up and they said it would be $85 to fix it, The damn thing only fell 6" and the screen cracked. I told them that this was BS and that they must have some sort of problem with there screens if they are that easy to break... The CS Rep, goes on to tell me that they don't have alot of screen cracking problems... I told her that I found that funny since on there automated phone system the 2nd option was for broken screens.

Anyone else have any similar experiences?

LCD screens are fragile just like glass.
Take a small sheet of glass and drop it from 6" onto a hard surface. Odds are it will break too.

Hehe.. thats a good one. Personally I look at it from a different perspective. I bought a handheld device, not a glass unicorn. I expect a certain level of durability from this device. I would agree that I was probably just unlucky, but none the less I don't believe that I abused the product and that raises some concerns. Perhaps Visors need to have a big red sticker on the back that says "FRAGILE" just like glass unicorns have.

All said and done, I'm not angry at Handspring.
