-- Palm gives better discounts. (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15593)
Some of you may have heard of the discounts that Palm is giving to their developers to celebrate the 10,00th third party software title. Now, being a developer (Palm and Handspring), these Palm discounts run deep. Sometimes up to 40%! Today I get an email from Handspring, much to the same effect. They say they are offering discounts to their developers on the Prism, Edge and Platinum. Here are the discounts they offer (to developers only):
Visor Prism $449 -$67.35 = $381.65
That's only like, 15%. Big Deal.
Visor Platinum $299 -$44.85 = $254.15
Isn't the Platinum already being offered for 250-something to consumers with a rebate? Thanks for nothing, Handspring.
Visor Edge-Blue $399 -$59.85 = $339.15
This discount is the same for all Edges. Big whoopty doo.
I must say I'm really disappointed in Handpsring, these prices don't even come close to what Palm is offering their developers. And we wonder why Palm has 85% of the PalmOS market?

P.S. I feel at home with geeks like you.
One thing to remember is Palm isn't discounting their top-of-the-line m500 or m505 but Handspring is. Prism is Handspring's most expensive device.

Yeah, they give developers a discount on the M500 and M505 you just need to look a little harder to find them.

I stand corrected. But they certainly don't publicize it.

Lowest prices I've found on the internet:
Visor Prism: $385
Visor Platinum: $214
Visor Edge: $355
Except in the Edge's case, Handspring's "discounts" aren't any different from store prices, if you know where to look.
Desperation
Palm is offering the steep discounts not to celebrate their 10,000th developer as they claim, but to get rid of inventory. Palm has a truck load of Palm Pilots in its warehouses that it need to get rid of somehow. Why not sell them for dirt cheap under the guise of developer appreciation? Its better than throwing them in the incinerator.
I don't Handspring has the inventory problems that Palm has. I think this developer thing they are having is:
1. A response to Palm's offer
2. Another writing on the wall that there will be a new Visor sometime this summer.

True.
I am really dissapointed with Handspring's response to Palm right now. Of course, they have a reason: their products are still selling wildly. But in order to keep that trend fresh, they're offering miniscule discounts.
This is a technique that is most commonly related to Apple. The only difference, is that Apple's computers are worth every penny (The Titanium G4, The iBook, iMac, etc!), since they are able to come out with new perks. (iTunes, iMovie, iDisk, etc!)
Handspring doesn't need to throw in some drastic price cuts, but moreover, some more goodies when you buy it. How about throwing in a backup module or a software module / OR / the coupons? How about free "Handspring Cash" good for a HS-related purchase for every friend we talk into buying a Handheld? Or free goodies for taking surveys and submitting ideas! I like freebies.
I think it's only a matter of time before HS gets off their high-horse. I can currently buy (without store discounts) , a Palm Vx for $179.99 , or a Visor Deluxe for $199.99 .
OUCH.

yeah but dont forget handspring comes in many different colors. Not different color face plates.
Also if ya buy the visor deluxe you get a Free leather case and not the cheeze one that comes with it valued at $24.95
Ok we all need to look at the big picture: which is i have know idea what i am talking about half the time and it gets worse if i dont take my yellow pills
palm vx for $179.99?
where can i get one for that? i am looking for one and would like to get that price.

I'm going to have to check when I bought mine. If I'm within 30 days, I'm either getting the rebate or returning my Edge (to get a new one with the rebate, of course).

HA!
I knew it!!!!! I knew it all along!
The Edge was WAY over-priced! HS dropping on a $100.00 rebate says a hekuva lot more than a $50.00 rebate !!!!
Handspring will STILL be keeping their profit margins with this rebate though, (unlike Palm) , so they're not losing money.
It's about time! NOW CUT THE PRICE ON THE PRISM!!!!
