Unhappy

I got my YadaYada last Thursday and have gone from elated to less than enthusiastic because the damn thing constantly gives me fatal exceptions and hangs. Considering that I'm using the original VDX [I've requested the optimized version], the signal is not too bad most places I go. I can't get reception everywhere, but I'm pleasantly surprised by what I do get. However, when I try to send/receive email or go to websites I usually get fatal exceptions or the thing hangs on me, requiring a soft reset. I even went so far as to backup and hard reset the thing so that the factory apps and Yada were the only ones on the VDX, but it still crashed. I've emailed support but am still waiting. Anyone else have these problems and hopefully get them resolved? Thanks.

bad unit?

pf,

you might have a bad unit (either vdx or modem) i've had mine for a month and only had one hard reset (and then i think I pulled it out while it was trying to handshake for a long time) I get soft resets every now and then, usually if i leave something like email or browser open, the vdx auto-shuts off and then I pull the modem out.

The number of problems you're having do not seem normal. I can relate to the ecstatic/devastated roller coaster with this thing, if it worked everywhere all the time I would be in heaven! As it were I have a new definition of civilization, it's wherever my minstrel works! I'm going to Europe this week so what does that say about over there...

yadayada problems

pf,

when you have some time to spare, just call tech support on the phone. 800-yadayada

They are very helpful, & you'll get instant gratification.

mxgian: you might be right about the bad unit - maybe the VDX - but today I called tech support [thanks for the suggestion, cnegrad] and was told some interesting things. Darren is the guy that sold me the unit and helped me today, and he knows his stuff. There were two things he mentioned: if you have more than one browser on the unit, chances are there will be problems. Second, the VDX OS [mine's 3.1H3] is not "strong" enough to consistently handle the Minstrel [not to mention more than one browser]. The optimized VDX will help, but still won't overcome the OS problem. Guess my Prism will be coming sooner than I thought.

I deleted Blazer and Eudora and things have certainly improved - but still not perfect. Darren also sent me another copy of the software that probably also helped.

Life is better - and my "civilization" is expanding.

Smile

Following up on my Yada problems, I received my optimized Deluxe yesterday [took only 8 days] from Handspring. I immediately popped the Minstrel into the new Visor to see if the signal was any better [I haven't yet been able to get a signal at home in the week+ I've had it]. The thing lit up and I was able to get a strong signal in most of the house. Better yet, it hasn't crashed yet - and I've already spent about 2+ hours playing with it between last night and today, most of that being after I restored my data. I also put Blazer back on with no problems.

I don't know that this is all because of the optimization - mxgian may be right about the bad Deluxe. The new one seems to be more solid and responsive so maybe mine was a little "off" from the beginning [the memo button never worked without pressing hard; the new one's like "butta"].

The signal I'm getting in the areas of LA where I've traveled is better than I expected.

I'm happy

Question VDX Optimizer

Can someone explain the Optimizer for the Visor Deluxe. I have one of the first Visor's and I want to get the Yada Yada Minstrel module. I read on this board that it may not work properly without the Optimizer.

1. Do you have to send you Visor back to Handspring?

2. Is the Optizer a new Visor or do they just upgrade the OS?

3. What do they charge?

Any help is appreciated.

Just call tech support and tell them your Visor is having a problem recognizing the minstrel modem. Tell them you tested the modem with a friends Visor prism and it worked well. That way they know that the problem is with the Visor and not the modem. They will send you an Optimize Visor in a couple of days at no charge. They will ask you to use the same box you received your Optimized Visor in and use the pre-paid label they provide to send the unit back to them. You will also need to provide them with a credit card in case you do not send your original Visor back to them.

I'm using my YY Minstrel w/my new Prism - I'm actually posting this using both w/Eudora Web. I haven't had any real problems w/fatal errors or resets (it does hang a bit every once in a while). I do seem to have problems maintaining a connection. It drops every 5 minutes or so. I can log on again if I turn the modem off and back on, but it's pretty annoying. I've only tried to use it in a couple of locations, so maybe I'm just unlucky.

I stopped getting fatal errors after I copied all the yada files from the Minstrel modem's memory to my prisms. Im not sure if this was the actual fix but I havent had any problems so far.
