-- New Springboard Module (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=8604)

I was watching HGTV or Discovery, maybe even TLC and they were talking about a new line of products from Sunbeam called Thalia. (www.thaliaproducts.com).

It is basically a large group of 'smart' appliances...the clock can turn on the coffee maker, the electric blanket, etc.

Anyway, I just happened to notice the guy had a Visor with a big (too big) module sticking out the top that lets you interface with these appliances as well as acts as a wireless phone. I would have copied some of the text and graphics from the site, but it is in Flash....

It seems the products are slated to be released late 2000 (isn't it pretty late). The module is listed under the appliances button along the bottom.

I saw the show you are talking about, I belive on the Discovery Channel.

Anyhow, did you notice that the guy didn't mention the Visor by name? He just said "you will plug it into your PDA."

How many appliances to buy...?

... and then the SB on top of that?
Man, is it me, or do they just seem out to make more & more money? What about the charitable feeling companies should have?

Last time I checked, making money is what all companies try to do... companies that have a lousy strategy or no strategy at all for making money (Boo.com anyone?) go out of business.

Capitalism is simple; if you think a company is charging too much for their products, don't buy them. If nobody buys them, the company can either go out of business, or drop the price. (Even then, they may still go out of business.)

I'm really tired of the attitude that any person or company who makes money is somehow evil or greedy... are there dishonest exceptions? Sure... but I don't know anyone who goes to their job for any reason other than to make money. The notion that companies should exist as charitable institutions for their customers is ridiculous... the recent trend of "Handspring sucks because there are no 'real' modules and all the other modules are too expensive" posts is getting really old. What exactly are the manufacturers supposed to do, sell their products at a loss to accommodate your budget?

I can't afford all of the modules I'd like either, but I don't think a company like Good Technologies should sell the SoundsGood module for $50 or $100 simply because that's what I think it should cost! As time goes on, Springboard manufacturers will get a sense of what the market will bear, and either find a way to adapt or go out of business. In order for them to stay in business so that you can buy their product, they're going to need to make money. Good pricing and customer service is not the same thing as charity.
