-- Visors and GPS? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=3865)

Question

Anyone know if it's possible/how to hook a stand-alone GPS (like a Magellen ColorTRAK) to a Visor for use with software like HandMap? I'd assume you can't just plug it into the hotsync port, since it's not serial. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know whether or not this is possible. But I suspect that by the time you came up with a solution, you would have saved money by waiting for one of the Springboard GPS modules that is forthcoming (some people even report that they have received and are using the HandyGPS module).

Yeah, but I'm not sure how the HandyGPS modules stack up against a stand-alone as far as things like channels, ability to handle tree-cover, etc... I need this for serious stuff. }

There was a topic a while back about this exact problem. I think that someone came up with a solution, do a search and I'll bet you'll find it.

Well, yes, that's valid. There are some initial impressions of it in a thread in the Springboard forum. So if you've been spoiled by a high quality standalone GPS system, the HandyGPS would probably be a shock to your system. But for those of us who don't have any kind of GPS, any GPS is better than no GPS.
