What font for "handspring" logo?
Does anyone know what font Handspring uses for its "handspring" logo?

The easy way would be to simply ask them... they might just tell you. A more round-about and time consuming way would be to research their trademark. The details should be specified in it.

many companies hire someone to design a character set for their logo. they don't just write out the word handspring and then look at it in different fonts.

You do not necessarily have to spec your typeface in a trademark application.
As Mensa pointed out, most good logotypes are either modified or original typefaces.
That said, the best way to figure it out is:

Where you just scan in the logo and upload an image and it tells you what it thinks it is. This is pretty cool technology, IMHO.
It's fairly accurate provided you have a large enough scan.
